Best Christmas Decorations in Paris You Can’t Miss

Paris is, without a doubt, one of my favourite cities for Christmas decorations and Christmas lights. The ‘City of Light’ is a festive treat every single year with incredible decorations in many of the main areas of the city, as well as some of the biggest department stores like Galeries Lafayette. Christmas in Paris is definitely something to experience!

There are also some smaller, less well-known spots dotted around the city that are worth a visit if you have the time. I’m not the most festive when it’s early December (I’m at least a mid-December person) but I was definitely feeling the Christmas spirit exploring these spots in Paris!

Best Locations for Christmas Decorations in Paris 2019

Galeries Lafayette

Address: Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, 40 Boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris
Nearest metro station: Chaussée d’Antin La Fayette (1-minute walk – lines 7 & 9), Opéra (4-minute walk – lines 3, 7 & 8)

This is the location of probably the best-known Christmas tree in Paris! Galeries Lafayette has a theme each year that they decorate to and the theme for 2019 is ‘Christmas Beehive’. While not a big fan of bees in real life (thanks to a phobia of wasps that relates to anything looking mildly similar), this is such a cute festive installation!

Every half an hour there is a ‘performance’, which is absolutely wonderful. There are lights and music and many of the decorations move – it’s really lovely to watch.

The other attraction inside Galeries Lafayette is the Glasswalk, a glass-bottomed platform that extends out into the centre of the huge domed space. I opted not to queue for this as I was there on a Friday afternoon and it was VERY busy – the queue would have been about 30 minutes or more! If you do want to visit, it’s best to visit on a weekday relatively early in the morning when you should only wait 15-20 minutes maximum.

They only permit 15 people onto the Glasswalk at one time and a security guard will usher you off when your time is up. It’s definitely a challenge to get an Instagram-style shot with this time pressure! I decided to instead get a chai latte and sit at the Starbucks and wait for another lights and music show – I highly recommend this option if you want to relax for a bit and also watch people who don’t realize the end of the glass walkway can wobble if they rush onto it too fast *evil laugh*.

Some of the best Christmas decorations in Paris can be found at Galerie Lafayette, one of the best photo locations in Paris. The 2019 Christmas tree is decorated with red flowers, green baubles and bees hanging from the ceiling.

The rooftop of Galeries Lafayette is also a must-visit when in Paris! This year, they have converted their rooftop – which provides wonderful views over Paris year-round – into an ice rink. And the best bit? It’s free!

Don’t miss one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and probably the only view of it while ice-skating! The rink is open from 9:30am to 8:30pm and will be open until the 31st December 2019. You can enjoy a 20-minute skating session for no fee whatsoever (a rarity in otherwise expensive Paris) and enjoy a view over the city while you do so.

Bon Marché Rive Gauche

Address: 24 Rue de Sèvres, 75007 Paris
Nearest metro station: Sèvres – Babylone (3-minute walk, lines 10 & 12), Saint-Sulpice (8-minute walk, line 4)

This is one place I actually hadn’t visited until seeing a photo of their Christmas décor! Their decorations this year feature what I like to call ‘levitating Christmas trees’, or Christmas trees suspended from the ceiling. Even if you don’t want to shop (or, like me, probably can’t afford any of the clothes), it’s a great spot to get out of the winter chill.

Le Bon Marché is rather photogenic in itself (not quite to the level of Galeries Lafayette but still architecturally impressive) and has a wonderful level of symmetry. Don’t miss a visit to the Librairie (confusingly this means bookshop, not library), where they have more suspended trees and also lots of interesting goodies to browse.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE...  Christmas Markets in January 2020

Paris at Christmas is a beautiful place and one of the best Paris photo locations at Christmas is Le Bon Marché department store. The suspended Christmas trees are decorated with lights in the shape of crowns and are hung from the ceiling of the store.

Christmas in Paris 2019 is a great time to see some beautiful festive decorations. In the bookstore of Le Bon Marché there are more Christmas trees suspended from the ceiling and it's a beautiful spot to see Christmas decorations in Paris.

Place Vendôme

Nearest metro station: Opéra (5-minute walk, lines 3, 7 & 8), Tuileries (5-minute walk, line 1), Pyramides (6-minute walk, lines 7 & 14), Madeleine (7-minute walk, lines 8, 12 & 14)

Every time I’ve been to Paris at Christmas, I’ve made a stop at Place Vendôme! They always have wonderful decorations and some impressive Christmas trees, so it’s a great spot to spend some time during Christmas in Paris.

Many of the stores in the square also have beautifully decorated façades, including designer stores like Chanel. Place Vendôme is definitely one of my favourite places for Christmas decorations in Paris and a must-visit if you’re in the capital during the festive season.

They have also set up some chalets for the ‘Christmas Chalet at the Ritz‘, a Christmas market experience hosted by the 5* hotel with delicious apple strudel as well as chocolate or hazelnut pastries on offer. They also offer the Ritz’s signature hot chocolate, made with 70% Venezuelan chocolate. The Christmas Chalet will be open at Place Vendôme until the 5th January 2020.

One of the best Paris instagram spots at Christmas is Place Vendôme with their huge Christmas trees simple decorated with Christmas lights.

Jardin des Tuileries

Nearest metro station: Tuileries (1-minute walk – line 1), Concorde (5-minute walk – lines 1, 8 & 12)

Only a short walk away from Place Vendôme and you will find Jardin des Tuileries. Tuileries is also one of my favourite places in Paris in autumn due to the wonderful autumn colours you get there and, during the festive season, Tuileries is transformed into a winter wonderland!

At Jardin des Tuileries, you will find a Christmas market (‘Christmas Village’) that is open until January 5th 2020. Take a ride on a merry-go-round or head to some of the chalets to enjoy some mulled wine (vin chaud) or delicious waffles (gaufres). Other chalets offer gifts and souvenirs for loved ones (or yourself) as well as gastronomic goodies as well.

There is also a Ferris Wheel, an ice rink and other fairground rides and even a whole host of festive activities aimed at children, such as puppet shows and Christmas stories.

One of the Christmas markets in Paris is located in the Jardin des Tuileries. There is a big Ferris Wheel with great views over Paris.

Le Village Royal

Address: 25 Rue Royale, 75008 Paris
Nearest metro station: Madeleine (2-minute walk – lines 8, 12 & 14), Concorde (5-minute walk – lines 1, 8 & 12)

Le Village Royal is a small area of Paris that is known for its designer stores as well as its overhead umbrella installation during summer. I had been meaning to stop by here for a while to see the umbrellas but never made it here during summer so I was excited to see what they had in store for Christmas and they definitely did not disappoint!

They definitely have some of the cutest Christmas decorations in Paris – at each end of the open-air shopping passage you will find a giant teddy bear! One is absolutely massive and towers over you and there is a little bench in front of it if you want to sit down for some photos. The other, smaller bear is located at the opposite end and holds three red balloons.

I’m not sure which is my favourite bear out of the two but I’ve definitely seen many more photos on Instagram featuring the smaller bear so he seems to be winning the cuteness contest… but either way, Le Village Royal is definitely winning my approval for their Christmas decorations.

One of the best instagram spots for Christmas decorations in Paris is Le Village Royal. There is topiary (shrub clipped into a design) shaped as a teddy bear and holding three red balloons.

If you want to see a giant teddy bear with beautiful Christmas lights then head to Le Village Royal for one of the best Christmas decorations in Paris!

Galerie Vivienne

Address: 5 Rue de la Banque, 75002 Paris
Nearest metro station: Bourse (4-minute walk – line 3), Pyramides (6-minute walk – lines 7 & 14), Palais Royal – Musée du Louvre (7-minute walk – lines 1 & 7)

One of the 20 or so remaining covered passages (passages couvert) in Paris, Galerie Vivienne is the best known and also has the best decorations during the festive period. These covered passages date back to the 19th century, although many were destroyed during the Haussmann renovations of Paris.

Located not far from the Palais Royal (one of the best places to take pictures in Paris – see more in my article on the most instagrammable locations in Paris!), Galerie Vivienne is a beautiful spot to visit all year round.

During the festive period, the elegant shopping arcade has some beautiful Christmas lights adorning the shops and is a wonderful spot to escape any bad weather (or just the cold!) during the winter months.

Galerie Vivienne is one of the best places to visit in Paris at Christmas!

Louis Vuitton (Place Vendôme)

Address: 2 Place Vendôme, 75001 Paris
Nearest metro station: Opéra (5-minute walk, lines 3, 7 & 8), Tuileries (5-minute walk, line 1), Pyramides (6-minute walk, lines 7 & 14), Madeleine (7-minute walk, lines 8, 12 & 14)

Each year, the Louis Vuitton store at Place Vendôme unveils a beautiful Christmas display, which is usually a huge sunburst that lights up the façade. This year was no different, with their beautiful display brightening up the gloomy weather that we were, unfortunately, dealing with during our visit to Paris at Christmas.

Just take care when photographing the Louis Vuitton façade as the road that passes in front of the decorations is often used – make sure not to take photos when stood in the road! This may sound like an obvious recommendation but I’ve seen it happen too many times…

There are also other beautifully (yet not so massively) decorated stores in this area, such as Longchamp, Roger Dubuis and the Mandarin Oriental hotel.

Dior (Avenue Montaigne)

Address: 34 Avenue Montaigne, 75008 Paris
Nearest metro station: Franklin-Roosevelt (4-minute walk, lines 1 & 9)

One of the best-known shop façades in Paris at Christmas has to be Dior – they have some wonderful Christmas decorations adorning the front of the store! Unfortunately, the store façade is under renovation during 2019 so there was no Christmas décor this year, but the beautiful decorations should return in 2020.

Even though 2019 did not see the iconic Dior decorations, Avenue Montaigne is nonetheless a beautiful place to see Christmas lights in Paris. The avenue is well known for the designer stores and other high-end locations and they are always beautifully decorated, particularly during the holiday season.

Champs Élysées

Nearest metro stations: George V (line 1), Franklin-Roosevelt (lines 1 & 9), Champs-Élysées – Clemenceau (lines 1 & 13)

Completing the list of beautiful Christmas decorations in Paris is the Champs-Élysées, an iconic location in the French capital. If you are looking for some of the best Christmas lights in Paris then this avenue is definitely where you need to be!

Unfortunately, due to the protests and riots, I didn’t make it to the Champs-Élysées during the festive season in 2019 so I didn’t get to see the beautiful lights in person this year (my visit managed to coincide – most unfortunately – with the worst day of protests).

Nevertheless, I love the Christmas lights that they put up on the Champs Élysées and have been lucky enough to see them in other years – it is definitely a beautiful location to visit in Paris at Christmas! You can admire the impressive lights stretching all the way down the avenue and up to the Arc de Triomphe, which is definitely something to see during the holiday season.

There are so many beautiful Christmas lights in Paris and they are definitely worth a visit!

There are so many beautiful locations to see wonderful Christmas decorations in Paris and some are truly iconic! While some may get very busy (Galeries Lafayette), others are slightly less known for their decorations (Le Bon Marché) so there is something to visit whatever your tastes!

If you’re looking to escape the cold or the rain then indoor locations such as Galerie Vivienne or Galeries Lafayette are ideal, but if you are treated with pleasant winter weather then Place Vendôme and Jardin des Tuileries are just as beautiful.

A different perspective of Jerez’s stunning cath A different perspective of Jerez’s stunning cathedral 😍 I had read that Jerez was known for its orange 🍊 blossoms, and I hoped that we would be able to see some when we were there! Sadly, we were a little late as they bloom in February and March, so early April they had been and gone. However, we did see LOTS of oranges 😁 so just another thing to go back to Jerez and see!✨Jerez Cathedral, or Catedral de Jerez, is a stunning building that dates back to the 17th century. The cathedral combines Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical architectural styles and they all come together to create this spectacular sight.✨Like many churches and cathedrals in Spain, Jerez Cathedral stands atop the Great Mosque of Jerez. Many churches in Spain were built on top of where a mosque stood previously. Other famous example of this include the the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Mezquita-Catedral), the Giralda in Sevilla, the mosque minaret that was converted into the cathedral’s bell tower. The practice of converting mosques into Christian places of worship was common during and after the Reconquista, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula that spanned the 8th to 15th centuries.✨Building the cathedral took more than 80 years 😱 but I think you’ll agree that it was worth it 😁 I hope that we can visit inside next time (it was closed as it was Easter weekend) and climb the bell tower as well 😁✨Have you heard of the city of Jerez before?✨#TFGinAndalucia #andaluciaviva #jerez #jerezdelafrontera #estaes_cadiz
Jerez Cathedral is so spectacular that it’s hard Jerez Cathedral is so spectacular that it’s hard to get it all in frame 😱 the cathedral is actually the original reason that I wanted to go to Jerez - I saw a photo of the cathedral and I knew I had to go see it in person 😁 almost a year later and I finally made it to this city 😍✨Our trip was NOT stress free though 😂 Easter 🐣 and that other fun global situation happening right now 🙃 meant that a lot of things were closed. Our first problem... arriving to our hotel at 4:30pm, only to find a sign on the door that said ‘cerrado temporal’ (temporarily closed). We had booked for five of us through @hotelsdotcom, although luckily we chose ‘pay at hotel’.I then had to spend the next hour or more on the phone to Hotels.com trying to make sure we wouldn’t be charged and also sorting out a new hotel 🙃 so thanks for nothing Soho Jerez Boutique Hotel 😒 maybe if you’re closed you shouldn’t be accepting bookings 🙄 luckily, @eurostarshotels Asta Regia had availability for three rooms - I highly recommend this hotel if you’re staying in Jerez! It’s super central and only a short walk from the Alcázar and the cathedral, plus the staff are lovely 🥰-Sadly the cathedral was also closed for visits 😔 but it just means I have to go back to see the inside 😁✨Have you ever had a trip where things have really not gone to plan? 😂 this wasn’t the only problem either 🤣 let me know what things have gone wrong for you on trips ⬇️📸 @robert.blackburn✨#TFGinAndalucia #JerezdelaFrontera #visitandalucia #turismocadiz #cádiz #jerez #andaluciaviva
Still one of my favourite spots in Gibraltar 😍 Still one of my favourite spots in Gibraltar 😍 once again, I spent the weekend bouncing around Gibraltar 🇬🇮 on the bus, and this time Michelle and I first went down to Europa Point (it was so clear! You could see Morocco clearly and even all the way to Ceuta) before heading back into town and getting the bus down to Blackstrap Cove, Eastern Beach and Catalan Bay.-Catalan Bay, also known as ‘La Caleta’, is a bay and fishing village. It’s supposedly ‘the only village in Gibraltar’ although I don’t know how much it really counts as a village 😝-There’s a bunch of different ideas as to how it came to be called Catalan Bay. One theory suggests that the bay is named after 350 Catalan servicemen who settled there after assisting the Anglo-Dutch forces in the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 - there’s documentary evidence of these servicemen settling in Gibraltar after the conquest so this could very well be the origin! Another theory is that it is a mispronunciation of the Spanish name, La Caleta, but I think the other theory seems more legit 😜-Catalan Bay is unique in Gibraltar with its beautiful church and brightly coloured houses, usually named after places in Italy. A lot of the residents of Catalan Bay were Genoese fishermen (we’re talking about back in the 18th century) and Genoese, the main Ligurian Italian dialect, was so widely spoken in Gibraltar at the time that government notices were published in the language, as well as Spanish and English. In the 19th century, only fishermen were permitted to live in Catalan Bay and had to have a permit from the Governor 👨‍⚖️ the families who live here now are mainly descendants of these Genoese fishermen!-The beach is also really popular in summer, which is why I only go out of season 🤣 other popular beaches near here include Eastern Beach and Sandy Beach 🏖-There usually is a big celebration here for Semana Santa / Easter, but I’m not sure what will happen this year. Also, if I was religious I would totally get married in this church 😂 it’s too pretty!-What do you think of this beautiful spot in Gibraltar? Have you seen it before?-#TFGinGibraltar #gibraltar #catalanbay #gibraltarrock
It’s been a while since I posted 😳 after ever It’s been a while since I posted 😳 after everything that has happened in the past few months, I didn’t really have the motivation to be taking photos or to be posting on social media. But I have some good news to share (at last) 🥰1) I have a job here in Gibraltar! This means I can now start to sort all my things like ID card and healthcard 💃🏻2) I CAN LEAVE 😂 thanks to now having a work contract, I can now travel across the border into Spain. We can only travel within the Cádiz province right now as Spain has border lockdowns for each province, plus municipalities if their number of cases is too high. It’s a bit complex and means I still can’t go and visit my parents 😔 (Estepona is in Málaga province) but I can see some more of Spain, such as Jerez de la Frontera or Tarifa. Hopefully planning some mini socially-distanced trips soon!3) I have been learning Japanese 🇯🇵 Rob and I decided that when we can finally travel internationally, we would like to do a big trip to Japan. So I decided to start learning Japanese 😁-This weekend, I took the bus with a friend down to Europa Point and the views were stunning 🥰 the weather was beautiful and you could clearly see across to Morocco! I wish I had taken my camera but I only had my phone on me so some iPhone shots were all I could do 😁-Have you gone anywhere lately? Have you planned anything for later this year or next year, even if it’s just an idea so far?-#TFGingibraltar #gibraltar #visitgibraltar #europe_greatshots
RIP Nan 💔 You just celebrated your 94th birthda RIP Nan 💔You just celebrated your 94th birthday. We couldn’t be there for that. I haven’t been able to see you in over a year. I won’t be able to go to your funeral. Neither will your daughter or son-in-law.-It sucks that you got your first vaccine jab but contracted the virus just after, or possibly just before you did. It sucks that we couldn’t visit you. It sucks that you seemed to have got better, but then you just... weren’t. 🤍 I wish we could have been there with you. I wish we could have said goodbye. 🤍-Last night, my Nan passed away around 7pm. Her oxygen levels dropped badly and she didn’t recover. She had contracted Covid in her care home, despite all the safety measures they had in place. She had JUST had the first vaccine, so I thought she was ‘safe’. Then when she got the virus, she was taken into hospital for the evening for observation but taken back to the care home (in isolation) as she seemed fine. That was about two weeks ago. She was fine, until yesterday she suddenly wasn’t. I’m still kind of in shock over it.-Nan always said about how she wanted to be with grandpops. He passed away 21 years ago, and she struggled so much after he passed. At least now she can finally be with him again ❤️1927 - 2021, you did good Nan 💜 rest in peace 🤍

One of my favourite trips last year was a quick br One of my favourite trips last year was a quick break to Armenia, which I took after a week in Georgia 😍 Armenia had always been on my list due to its stunning landscapes, beautiful monasteries and interesting history. I had the opportunity to spend three days there before flying back from Georgia and I’m SO glad I did 😍✨I did a tour with @armeniaexplorer, a local tour guide I found online. It was just me and them on an awesome little private tour, which meant I could take all the photo breaks I needed 😝 plus Armine was always willing to help me with any photos!✨This is probably one of the most iconic views in Armenia. Khor Virap is a monastery that dates all the way back to 642 😱 and behind it you can see Mount Ararat, a snow-capped dormant volcano that is actually located just across the border in Turkey. Mount Ararat is considered a sacred mountain by Armenians and is actually depicted on the coat of arms of the country. In the future, I definitely want to go back to Armenia for longer! There are so many other places I would love to visit in the country, such as Tatev Monastery, Lake Sevan, Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery.✨Where did you go last year that you would love to visit again in the future?✨#TFGinArmenia #armenia🇦🇲 #khorvirap #visitarmenia
