My #1 choice of where to stay in Gibraltar is the 5* Sunborn Yacht Hotel

Bright pink flowers frame a picturesque marina with luxury yachts, including the Sunborn Gibraltar in the background. An ideal area for those exploring where to stay in Gibraltar.

                Ocean Village & Marina Bay

Ocean Village is one of the liveliest areas in Gibraltar, with a wide range of dining options, bars and cafes right on the water! The most popular and best-known hotel in the Ocean Village and Marina Bay is the luxurious Sunborn Yacht Hotel.

If luxury is a priority, where to stay in Gibraltar is simple – Ocean Village is the place! You can also find a variety of apartment rentals here, with beautiful marina views and amenities like rooftop pools.

Ocean Village decorated with red and white bunting for Gibraltar National Day, lined with cafes and lush planters. A vibrant spot in one of the best areas to stay in Gibraltar.
Ocean Village decorated with bunting for National Day

Staying in Ocean Village or Marina Bay (which is the northern section past Ocean Village, towards the runway) is ideal for being close to Gibraltar’s nightlife, making it a great choice for travellers who enjoy a vibrant social scene.

                Best for:

                Nightlife Lovers

                Luxury Travellers

                Couples

The disadvantages of staying in Ocean Village include the noise level—certain locations in Ocean Village can be somewhat noisy given that it’s the location of most of Gibraltar’s bars. Accommodation here is also usually more expensive than in other areas of Gibraltar, mainly because this is where the more expensive houses and apartments are for locals!

                • Vibrant, fun atmosphere
                • Lots of bars and restaurants
                • Noise from nearby bars
                • Can be pricier than other areas

Staying in the heart of Gibraltar means you’re just steps away from shops, restaurants, cafes and major attractions like Gibraltar’s two cathedrals, the Gibraltar National Museum, and Casemates Square.

The entire area of Main Street and the town centre is extremely walkable, making it ideal for those who enjoy being able to get places on foot. If you’re wondering where to stay in Gibraltar to be in walking distance for almost everything, this is the area to choose!

                Grand Casemates Square

                Eastside & Catalan Bay

Staying on Gibraltar’s Eastside—particularly in or near Catalan Bay—offers a wonderfully relaxed seaside vibe. Catalan Bay, with its colourful fishing village charm, is perfect if you’re seeking tranquillity and the beach on your doorstep.

Accommodations such as Gibraltar Stay’s Catalan Bay apartments provide a unique, local feel right on the seafront. When choosing where to stay in Gibraltar in summer, you definitely want to consider if you want easy beach access!

                Best for:

                Beach Lovers

                Families

                Couples

The downside of staying on the Eastside is that there are fewer dining and entertainment options nearby, meaning that you’d need to travel into the centre for more variety, or—if you are staying in a holiday rental—purchase groceries to cook yourself.

A picturesque view of Catalan Bay in Gibraltar, showcasing colorful houses lined up along the beach with the iconic Rock of Gibraltar in the background. One of the best areas in Gibraltar to stay, perfect for those seeking scenic seaside vibes.
                Catalan Bay, Gibraltar

Since the Caleta Hotel was demolished in 2022, there is currently no hotel located on the Eastside. There are plans for a Hilton Hotel to be built on the site of the old Caleta Hotel, with a theoretical 2025 completion date, but this currently seems unlikely given the lack of progress so far!

The other downside of staying on the Eastside is the lack of transport links. Compared to other areas of Gibraltar, this area has fewer transport links to other places. Only buses 4 and 8 run here, and the 4 runs only every 45 minutes and ends at 18:30. The 8 runs half-hourly and runs from 07:00 until 21:00.

However, you can find some holiday rentals available—such as this stunning beachfront duplex for up to six guests located at Catalan Bay—that come with parking. This is excellent if you are planning an extended trip from Gibraltar to locations in Andalucia and will want a car for exploring!

Alternatively, you can walk from Catalan Bay to the centre of town, which takes around 30-40 minutes each way.

                • Quiet and picturesque
                • Steps away from the beach
                • Limited dining options
                • Less convenient transport links

Best Places to Stay in Eastside and Catalan Bay:

                • Gibraltar Stay Catalan Bay Cosy Duplex: Cosy beachfront rental with sea views. One-bedroom apartment for up to four people from £150 per night.
                • Gibraltar Stay Catalan Bay Duplex: Roomier beachfront apartment with room for up to six people. One-bedroom apartment from £187 per night.
                • Beachfront Apartment at Both Worlds: Located overlooking Sandy Bay, this apartment has a balcony with beautiful sea views. Two-bedroom apartment for up to four people from £125 per night.

My #1 choice of where to stay near Catalan Bay is the Gibraltar Stay Catalan Bay Duplex

                Northside

Northside of Gibraltar pretty much consists of everything along Devils Tower Road (generally shortened by locals just to DTR). This is the area of Gibraltar next to the airport and near the border. There are no hotels located between the border and the airport, but once you are across the runway then you’ll find holiday rentals and a hotel on Devils Tower Road.

For example, you’ll find the 3-star Holiday Inn Express located on Devils Tower Road, which is about 15 minutes by foot to the border across the airport runway (which you’ll find more information about in my article on awesome things to do in Gibraltar!).

The modern facade of Gibraltar Airport, with large glass windows reflecting the surrounding trees and the iconic Rock of Gibraltar in the background. This location serves as a gateway to discovering the best areas in Gibraltar.
A wide view of Gibraltar Airport's runway, intersected by a pedestrian crossing and road, with surrounding residential buildings in the background. This unique feature of Gibraltar showcases how infrastructure is integrated into the landscape, making it one of the most distinctive areas in the city. Staying in Northside means you're just minutes from the airport and the border.

Northside is closer to the town centre than areas like Eastside, being around 15-20 minutes on foot from Casemates Square.

Staying in the Northside of Gibraltar is particularly useful if you’ll be leaving early from the airport, or arriving late via the border or the airport.

                Best for:

                Budget Travellers

                Leaving Early

                Beach Lovers

The area has seen significant redevelopment in recent years, with new apartment blocks and hotels springing up. You can find a variety of holiday rentals here, such as Key to the Straits’ Luxury Sunrise Oceanview Apartment in the E1 development. The accommodation options in Northside tend to be more affordable than those located in Ocean Village or the town centre.

Staying in the Northside also provides handy access to Eastern Beach (10-15 minute walk) and Catalan Bay (15-20 minute walk), which is ideal if you’re looking to add some beach days to your holiday!

                • Close to the border and airport
                • More affordable than other areas
                • Not as many bars and restaurants
                • Less character than other areas

Best Places to Stay Near the Border

                • Holiday Inn Express Gibraltar (3*): Spacious rooms in a pleasant hotel with an attached restaurant. Double rooms from £150 per night.
                • CP Top Floor Luxury Studio with Spa & Pool Access: Ideal for longer-term stays with waterfront views, pool and spa access. One-bedroom apartment from £97 per night.
                • CP High Floor Luxury Studio at The Hub: Luxury studio apartment with a balcony, gym access and only 600m from Eastern Beach. One-bedroom apartment from £90 per night.
                • Luxury Sunrise Beach and Oceanview Room with Balcony: Holiday rental perfect for longer stays, located in the E1 development. Ocean view room and pool and spa access included. One-bedroom apartment from £115 per night.
A stylish and functional hotel room at the Holiday Inn Express in Gibraltar, featuring a sleek desk, comfortable bedding, and a minimalist design. Ideal for travellers looking for where to stay in Gibraltar with modern comforts.

                Westside

Westside runs all the way from just south of Ocean Village all the way to the beautiful Queensway Quay. This area covers an extensive part of Gibraltar that is actually all built on reclaimed land!

This area is much more residential, as well as being the location of office blocks (such as Europort) and the hospital. You’ll still find lots of great options for food and drink, such as Hustle & Flow (great for brunch), Lek Bangkok (delicious Thai food), and all the excellent food options down at Queensway Quay.

Boats moored at Queensway Quay Marina reflect on the still waters under a warm evening glow, with modern architecture visible in the background. This scenic spot is perfect for dining and leisure, offering a glimpse into the best areas to stay in Gibraltar for waterfront luxury.
                Queensway Quay, Gibraltar

Westside is still close to the town centre, with blocks such as WestOne (where you can find holiday rentals) only a 5-minute walk to Main Street.

There aren’t any hotels located in Gibraltar’s Westside, so you’ll only find holiday rentals here.

                Long-term Stays

                Larger Groups

                Families

The options range from the luxurious at King’s Wharf (close to Queensway Quay), such as this 1-bedroom flat with access to a gym and rooftop pool (starting at £140 per night), to the slightly more affordable developments of Eurotowers and WestOne, such as this 1-bedroom flat with pool access (starting at £110 per night).

This area offers a more local experience of Gibraltar, but I would only recommend it if you are staying for a longer period. If you are only staying for a few days, I recommend staying in a hotel rather than a holiday apartment!

                • Pleasant area close to the centre
                • Great options for cafes and restaurants
                • No hotels available, only holiday rentals
                • Not a touristy area

Best Places to Stay in Westside:

                • Kings Wharf Large Studio Apartment: Luxurious holiday rental with a balcony and access to multiple pools and a fitness centre. Studio apartment for two people from £120 per night.
                • Bentley Holiday Apartment WestOne: Affordable studio apartment with views of the Rock of Gibraltar. One-bedroom apartment from £102 per night.
                • Luxury Kings Wharf One-Bed Apartment: Beautiful one-bedroom apartment with a balcony and sea views in the upscale Quay29 development in Kings Wharf. Nature Reserve

While you can’t stay in the Nature Reserve itself, you can stay right on its doorstep.

The Rock Hotel is located close to one of the walking paths into the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, making it a perfect place to stay if you are looking to do some hiking adventures while you’re in Gibraltar!

My favourite walking route of the Rock starts relatively near here, which takes you up Engineer Road to the bottom of the Mediterranean Steps, where you’ll find the Pillars of Hercules Monument.

The Pillars of Hercules monument stands proudly with a map and inscriptions symbolising Gibraltar's historic maritime significance. This landmark is a key stop for visitors exploring the cultural and historical side of Gibraltar.
                The Pillars of Hercules Monument
A view of The Rock Hotel's grand white facade surrounded by lush greenery and palm trees, with the iconic rock looming above. This historic hotel is one the best hotels in Gibraltar for a luxurious and scenic getaway.
View of The Rock Hotel from the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens

A stay in this area offers beautiful views and is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who are keen to explore the nature reserve on foot!

                Best for:

                Nature Lovers

                Couples

                Luxury Travellers

The Rock Hotel is the only accommodation option in this area, so if you’re looking for a large variety of accommodation options, this is not the area!

There are also minimal dining and entertainment options here, but it is only a short bus into the town centre for more options to choose from. Buses 2 and 3 both run close to the Rock Hotel, and you can also walk to and from town in around 10-20 minutes, depending on where you’re heading to. The walk back up to the Rock Hotel is all uphill though, so I personally prefer walking down and getting the bus back!

The buses only run until 21:00 on weekdays, with a night bus running every hour from around 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays only. If you plan on experiencing the bars of Gibraltar, then this is probably not the ideal location for you!

Penelope twirls in a blue dress decorated with a print of lemons on the Skywalk, a glass platform jutting out from the edge of the Rock of Gibraltar, with expansive ocean views and the majestic landscape stretching into the distance. Where to Stay Near Gibraltar: La Línea

Another popular option is to stay across the border in Spain, in the border town called La Línea de la Concepción (known just as ‘La Línea’). This was a particularly popular option before Brexit as the hotels in La Línea are much more affordable compared to those in Gibraltar. When my parents first visited me in Gibraltar they stayed in the Ohtels Campo de Gibraltar!

Post-Brexit, this option is a little more complicated for non-EU passport holders. Every time you cross the Spain-Gibraltar border as a non-EU passport (or residency) holder, you will need to get your passport stamped and show proof of accommodation in Spain or a departing flight from a Spanish airport.

A dramatic landscape of the Rock of Gibraltar from La Línea in Spain, with its rugged cliffside leading to the ocean, offers a breathtaking view for nature enthusiasts. Staying in La Línea is a great option for places to stay near Gibraltar on a budget.
View of Gibraltar from the promenade in La Línea

                Best for:

                EU Passport Holders

People Also Looking to Explore Andalucía

                Budget Travellers

This means that you’ll get two stamps in your passport for every visit to Gibraltar, making it less than ideal if you plan on going back to your hotel during the afternoon. However, if you plan on exploring more of southern Spain and only doing one day in Gibraltar, this may be worth the stamps! Just ensure that you have proof of your hotel booking on you when you’re crossing the border as they’re very strict with this.

If you stay in La Línea, it’s also worth being aware that the border queue can get long at peak times, as a lot of cross-frontier workers cross into Gibraltar at the start of a work day and cross back to Spain in the evening. I would avoid crossing from around 8am-9am and 4pm-6pm if you can, as these are the busiest times!

                • More affordable than Gibraltar
                • Lots of bars and restaurants in the town
                • Non-EU passport holders must have their passport stamped when crossing the border
                • Crossing the border regularly can be time-consuming

How to Decide Where to Stay in Gibraltar

Choosing where to stay in Gibraltar is pretty straightforward, but it all depends on your priorities. If you’re after a bit of luxury, places like The Rock Hotel or Sunborn Gibraltar (a yacht hotel!) offer a fancy stay with great views. On a budget? There are affordable options like Emile Youth Hostel, Bristol Hotel or even private holiday rentals. It’s a small place, so you’re never too far from the action!

For even more affordable options, consider staying across the border in La Línea. The hotels there are even more affordable than in Gibraltar, but you will have to include the inconvenience

Staying centrally in Gibraltar is a game-changer. The town area, near Main Street or Casemates Square, is perfect if you want everything within walking distance. You won’t need a car when staying at any of the central locations, which is good because parking here can be a nightmare!

A serene view of Commonwealth Park in Gibraltar, featuring a tranquil pond surrounded by rocks and greenery, a peaceful retreat for visitors in one of the best areas in Gibraltar to explore and relax. This park highlights the natural beauty of Gibraltar, offering a scenic spot for relaxation and reflection.

The historic facade of The Convent in Gibraltar, showcasing intricate Gothic architecture and a grand archway leading into the building's interior. This landmark, situated in a prime area, is a must-see for those exploring Gibraltar's rich cultural heritage.

When planning where to stay in Gibraltar, think about how close you want to be to key attractions like the Rock and Nature Reserve or Main Street. Love the beach? Stay near Catalan Bay. Into history? A central spot will keep you close to places like the Gibraltar National Museum. For nightlife, Ocean Village is where it’s at—lots of bars and a buzzing marina vibe.

Wherever you stay, you’ll be close to Gibraltar’s main sights. We might be a small territory but we are packed with variety. So, choose a base that fits your plans and enjoy exploring!

A panoramic view from Gibraltar's Upper Rock, showcasing Penelope gazing at the bustling territory below, dotted with ships in the Bay and framed by vibrant wildflowers. This breathtaking perspective highlights why the Rock of Gibraltar is an incredible place to visit.
A Barbary macaque sits gracefully on a railing in Gibraltar with lush greenery and the distant sea creating a stunning natural backdrop. These iconic monkeys are a must-see for travellers exploring the Rock of Gibraltar, one of the best areas in Gibraltar to visit.

📆 August 17th - 24th
📍☀️ Feria del Día: Málaga Centro
📍🌙 Feria de la Noche: Recinto Ferial Cortijo de Torres

The Feria de Málaga is unique in that the day Feria (Feria del Día) and the night Feria (Feria de la Noche) take place in different locations!

The day feria transforms the entirety of the centre of Málaga into a huge party and it’s amazing! There’s dancing in the streets, music, food and so much more 🤩 in my opinion, in makes Málaga one of the best ferias you can go to!

The feria will start with the Cabalgata (cavalcade) at 8pm on the 16th August, then an incredible drone show and fireworks show ay midnight at the Port of Málaga 🎆

Make sure to watch one of the Verdiales performances, a form of flamenco that originates from Almogía, a town to the north of Málaga! It’s amazing to watch 🤩

On our day trip to Cinque Terre, we visited three of the five villages - Riomaggiore was stunning, but definitely more effort walking wise 😂 it’s very hilly with lots of steps, so not the best if you have any mobility impairments. In comparison, Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza were pretty accessible and step-free in most areas!

If you only have one day in Cinque Terre, here’s If you only have one day in Cinque Terre, here’s the itinerary for you 👇🏼

This is a perfect itinerary if you don’t want to rush about all day trying to visit all five towns (I wouldn’t recommend it!) and also don’t have the fitness/mobility for the hikes between towns.

COMMENT ‘link’ 💬 for my full blog post with this itinerary in-depth!

1️⃣ Monterosso

Start in beautiful Monterosso al Mare! Admire the picturesque Bagni Fegina with its iconic orange and green beach umbrellas, before walking the coastal path from the train station to the Old Town. Grab a delicious gelato or caffè to fuel up for the day 😋 visit the two stunning churches in the old town and meander around Monterosso, exploring the beautiful corners of the largest town in Cinque Terre 🤩

Next, take the train or ferry to your next stop…

2️⃣ Riomaggiore

Enjoy a tasty lunch at Tutti Fritti (we loved their fried anchovies!) before walking up to the church and castle, which provide amazing views over the town and nearby hillsides.

PS: if you have mobility limitations, Riomaggiore is very hilly, so you may want to spend less time here and more time instead in Monterosso and Vernazza, which have fewer inclines!

Make sure to head to the marina for that iconic Riomaggiore photo 🤩

Next, take the train to…

3️⃣ Vernazza

Walk through town and down to the beach. Visit the church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia and walk along Via Visconti for scenic views of the town and harbour.

If you have the time/energy/ability, head up to the impressive viewpoint above town for amazing views of Vernazza (approx 15-20 minutes each direction).

Enjoy a gelato at Gelateria Dal 1968 and do a spot of souvenir shopping. Make sure to grab some trofie pasta!

Go back to the train station before heading back to Monterosso al Mare for dinner (Pizzeria La Smorfia is highly recommended) or heading back to wherever you’re staying 🥰

And there you go - the perfect itinerary if you only have one day in Cinque Terre!

Save this for future trips or send it to a friend who wants to go 🤩

Did you know that Pixar’s animated film ‘Luca’ was inspired by the towns of Cinque Terre? 🤩

The town of Vernazza (pictured) inspired the main square of Portorosso, the fictional town in Luca! 🇮🇹

The film’s director visited the towns of Cinque Terre while they scoured locations for the film, and they decided not to base the fictional town off of one single town, but rather take inspiration from the different towns of the region 🤩

The animators travelled to Cinque Terre to see and experience the beautiful towns, and then applied those experiences and views to the film’s location 🥰

The iconic red building at the marina in Riomaggiore features in the films as well!

This is how much a week in Italy cost us 😱👇🏼

Here’s an exact cost breakdown of how much we spent on a 6-day trip to Italy, including flights, hotels, activities, attractions, transport, food and more! I’m a massive nerd and tracked everything we spent money on 😜

This was a mid-range to splurge trip 😂 as we were travelling for my best friend’s birthday! You could absolutely spend less than this by staying at cheaper hotels (or in hostels) and not spending as much on food. We definitely didn’t limit our food spending 🤣🤣 and I’m happy to announce we spent a total of €71.50 on gelato between the two of us 😂🍧

FLIGHTS ✈️ cost us €107.09 each, which was really good! Also did you see those plane views?! 🤩 we actually partly decided our destination for this trip based on flight costs, and flying to Milan was one of the cheapest options!

HOTELS 🏨 cost us €469.37 each, which for five nights (two nights in Genoa, two nights in Rapallo and one night in Milan) isn’t too bad. We did stay at mid-range accommodation, and our Milan stay was the most expensive (which makes sense - it’s not the cheapest city 😁)

TRANSPORT 🚊 cost €191.05 each, which also included our taxi to Málaga airport as our flight was at 6am 😂 We also took some first-class trains, which were surprisingly affordable 😱

ATTRACTIONS 🎟️ cost €56 each, including things like museum tickets, cathedral entry fees etc!

ACTIVITIES 🚤 were a total of €207.46 each, including our boat trip of the Italian Riviera, city tours etc 🛺

FOOD 🥘 cost us €283.81 each, or around €48 each per day 😳 we definitely splurged on food, and also had a lot of coffee and gelato breaks 🫣 however, we barely spent any money on alcohol, which did keep this cost down!

SOUVENIRS 🎁 cost us €32.25 each, which was mainly postcards, pasta and pesto 😂

MISC 🧺 €18.50

In total, we spent €227.59 per person per day - which is quite a lot! Italy was definitely not as affordable as I’d expected, and we spent more than I would have anticipated.

💰 TOTAL trip cost (2 people, 6 days): €2,731.07

Would you have expected this to be less? Or more? 😁

Don’t go to Cinque Terre without knowing these F Don’t go to Cinque Terre without knowing these FIVE things 😱👇🏼

Is Cinque Terre on your bucket list? 🤩 save this for your trip!

1) How do you pronounce it? 👀

It’s not ‘sinky tare’ or ‘thinky terry’ - it’s ‘chin-kweh terr-eh’. I apologise to any native Italian speakers, but I tried my best 😁

2) Don’t go by car! 🚗

Parking is very limited, and the roads are narrow and winding. Many of the roads are also open to locals and deliveries only!

The best way to travel around Cinque Terre is by train, by boat, or by foot. While I haven’t hiked Cinque Terre, I can absolutely recommend travelling the area (a national park, in fact) by train.

3) If you do choose to travel by train, get the Cinque Terre Pass!

The cost of a journey between any two stations (Monterosso al Mare - Vernazza - Corniglia - Manarola - Riomaggiore) is €10 in peak season.

The cost of the train pass varies depending on whether it’s peak or low season (peak season cost us €32,50 each) and covers all train travel in Cinque Terre for the day!

4) The ferries don’t always run 😳

And yes, we learnt this the hard way 😂 the seas were quite rough when we visited and all the ferries were cancelled 😳 make sure you have a backup plan just in case!

5) Don’t try and visit all five villages in one day 🙅🏻‍♀️

Believe me, you won’t get to experience any of them if you try! We visited three in one day, and even that was pushing it - our stop in Vernazza wasn’t long at all.

I would recommend picking two or three (maximum!) and exploring those, rather than trying to cram all five in on one day. If you want to explore all five, spend 2-3 days visiting Cinque Terre instead!

BONUS TIP:

Cinque Terre is NOT cheap 💰 to keep costs down, I recommend staying instead in Rapallo, La Spezia or Sestri Levante. The trains run regularly from early til late, and it’s so much more affordable to stay than in Cinque Terre itself.

We booked our tour on @getyourguide, which had a variety of amazing boat trip options! We chose this one as it had evening options and departed from just 3 minutes away from our hotel.

We sailed from Rapallo, past Santa Margherita Ligure, Baia di Paraggi, Baia Cannone and finally to Portofino.

When you visit the Italian Riviera, you can’t miss taking a boat trip to see all the towns from the water! We took a boat trip on our first night in Rapallo, and it was such a great way of getting a sneak peek of the places we were going to be visiting 🥰

Seeing all the incredible architecture was amazing! We booked our tour via @getyourguide, making it so easy to compare the different boat trip options! 🛥️
