Where to Stay in Estepona, Spain: Top Areas & Hotels in 2026
Estepona is easily one of my favourite places in all of Andalusia. Now, I’m probably somewhat biased in that opinion since this beautiful gem on the Costa del Sol is where my parents chose to move to 5 years ago, but I still think it’s one of the most beautiful places in Andalusia!
Not as glitzy as Marbella and not as busy as Málaga, Estepona is an ideal alternative to these better known places on the Costa del Sol, or as an addition to a wider trip to the region.
Conveniently located just 45 minutes from Gibraltar, Estepona is easy to reach from both Málaga Airport and from Gibraltar Airport, meaning you have even more possibilities for flying in.
Despite being a small city, Estepona encompasses a wide area on the Costa del Sol, with hotels as far southwest as Buenas Noches and Bahía Dorada and as far northeast as Cancelada and El Paraíso being classed as “Estepona”, even though they’re nowhere close to the town centre.
That’s why I’ve written this guide, because thinking you’re booking a hotel in Estepona and then discovering that you need to take a taxi to actually get to the town centre? Not the holiday vibe we’re going for!
Below, you’ll find my top recommendations of where to stay, tips on how to choose the best place based on your travel needs, and a breakdown of the various areas and neighbourhoods that make up Estepona.

Where to Stay in Estepona – My Quick Answer & Experience
As someone who has spent the past five or so years calling Estepona my second home, I consider myself pretty well informed and perfectly placed to give you tips and recommendations for this beautiful town.
While I haven’t personally stayed at every hotel featured in this guide, friends or family members have stayed at many of them. I’ve also researched several of the properties in detail, including looking into some as potential wedding venues when I got married in 2025!
The first time I ever stayed in Estepona, my now-husband and I booked a very, very beachfront, but not particularly impressive, two-star hotel. It was the sort of place where you had somewhere to lay your head at night, and that was about it. There were no bells and whistles, but it was well located and gave us easy access to the beach and the old town. And to be honest, that’s all you need from a hotel sometimes!
However, in the past few years they’ve done some major upgrades to this hotel, so if you’re looking for an affordable option right on the beachfront, then take a look at Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma. They upgraded all of the rooms and the decor looks amazing now, so it’s ideal if you’re keen to be right on the beach!

On a later visit to Estepona with my parents while they were looking for somewhere to rent while they scouted out Estepona as their future home, we stayed at another hotel on Avenida Juan Carlos I, Mare Estepona Hotel. This hotel is a great option for families as it has larger family rooms. My parents also really enjoyed the breakfast here!
My best friend has also visited Estepona several times and stayed at Hotel Estepona Plaza each time. She couldn’t recommend it more highly! This hotel is located in a great area, where you’re within the old town but also a very short walk away from the beach. They also have a rooftop pool, which is perfect for cooling off in the middle of a sunny day!
When friends and family have visited, they’ve also helped me build up a fairly decent knowledge of the local hotels. My godfather and godmother chose to stay at H10 Estepona Palace, which, as they soon discovered, isn’t quite in Estepona town itself.
While it’s an amazing place to stay, the hotel is west of the centre, beyond the port, so you can’t simply wander out of the door and straight into the old town. This is why you need to pay close attention to the location when booking a hotel in Estepona!
Estepona covers a much wider area than you might initially expect, and some hotels marketed as being in Estepona are several kilometres from the centre. That may be exactly what you want if you’re looking for a resort-style stay by the beach, but it’s less convenient if your plan is to walk into town for dinner each evening.
When it comes to choosing what I think is the best hotel in Estepona, Estepona Plaza Hotel would probably get my vote.

What Hotel & Neighbourhood Is Best for Me?
As I mentioned above, Estepona is more than just its historic centre. Hotels with Estepona in the name can be found along the coast from Bahia Dorada to San Pedro Alcántara, so if you’re keen to be in the city centre, you definitely need to make sure you’re booking a property that’s in Estepona proper.
The best area and hotel for you will depend somewhat on your needs and the kind of trip you’re planning. I’ll break a few options down below, and then go into detail on the various areas that make up Estepona in the section after.
1. Couples Visiting Estepona
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, I couldn’t recommend Estepona more! It’s actually one of the first Spanish weekend getaways I took with my now-husband, all the way back in 2019.
For a romantic stay in Estepona, I’d recommend staying in the historic centre, unless you know you specifically want to be at a more resort-style hotel where you can get away from everything.

If you’re more of a city break person than a “lounge by the pool” person, then I’d absolutely recommend Hotel Estepona Plaza or Hotel El Pilar Andalucía. Hotel El Pilar was actually on my shortlist as a wedding venue!
Hotel El Pilar Andalucía is definitely one of the best hotels in Estepona for a romantic stay, with its central location at the Plaza de las Flores (“Square of the Flowers” in English). You’re just steps away from lots of great dining and drink options, and if you’re feeling fancy, you can book a room with a terrace as well.

If you’re looking for a relaxing lounge by the pool getaway as a couple, then you should consider H10 Estepona Palace. Located south of Estepona past the port, this is the best resort-style hotel still within a fairly convenient distance of Estepona’s centre.
However, if you’re really looking for luxury and relaxation, then I’d absolutely recommend Gran Hotel Elba Estepona Thalasso & Spa or Hacienda del Mar member of Meliá Collection. These hotels are both 5 stars and are perfect for a relaxing yet romantic stay!

2. Backpacking in Estepona (Best Budget Stays in Estepona)
Backpacking used to be my main style of travelling (*cough* 10 years ago or so *ahem*), and if I’d been backpacking in Estepona? My first choice would absolutely have been Veranera Hostel!
Estepona isn’t the most budget destination in Spain, but this hostel is a great choice. As hostels go, it’s pretty upmarket too! They have a great rooftop with beautiful views over Estepona, and they have both beds in dormitories as well as private rooms.
3 nights at this hostel in an 8-bed dorm will cost around €100 (with a €14 surcharge for free cancellation), which is really pretty great. They also have female only dorms available.

Best budget stay in Estepona: Veranera Hostel
3. Family Vacations in Estepona (Where to stay in Estepona for families)
Estepona is an incredibly family friendly place to stay, and there are lots of great options for family stays!
If you’re looking for a great option in the centre of Estepona for a family, then Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma has family suites that are great value. It’s also incredibly well located to go to the beach, so it’s ideal if you have little ones who won’t want to wait to get there!
Another excellent city centre option for families is Las Brisas Estepona, a 3 star hotel right in the heart of Estepona. They have family suites available and are a great choice if you want to be within a short distance of the beach and everything in Estepona’s old town.

Book the best family hotels in Estepona city centre here: Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma (2.5 🌟) or Las Brisas Estepona (3 🌟)
For a more relaxing family getaway (especially if having a big pool is on your list!), then make sure to check out SOL by Meliá Marbella Estepona – Atalaya Park and Estepona Holiday Hills.
SOL by Meliá is a great choice if you want to be right on the beach (Atalaya Isdabe Beach), and have everything right on your doorstep without leaving the resort, including two swimming pools, two restaurants, and three bars. The resort also has a family entertainment program, which includes shows and live music.
Estepona Holiday Hills is an aparthotel complex in the hills behind Estepona (yeah, I suppose the name did give that away), and it’s actually one of the places my parents looked at when choosing a property to buy in Estepona!
Estepona Holiday Hills is a great choice if you don’t need to be right on the beach, but you want somewhere with amenities like a pool, rooms with multiple bedrooms and a terrace, and free parking. If you’re doing a family road trip in Andalusia and Estepona is on your itinerary, then Estepona Holiday Hills is an excellent choice.

My 5 Top Neighborhoods in Estepona Spain
Let’s get into what makes up Estepona!
The district (or municipality) of Estepona covers an area of 137 square kilometres, with 21 kilometres of coastline (which includes two Blue Flag beaches!).
The town of Estepona is what most people think of when referring to Estepona, and this is the area that covers the historic centre and down to the port. This is where you’ll find the majority of the bars and restaurants, as well as locations like the Orchidarium (the largest collection of orchids in Spain!), as well as Estepona’s many murals.
Want to know more about the best things to do in Estepona? Check out my guide on the best things to do in the city!

The municipality of Estepona is bordered by Marbella to the east, Casares to the west, and Benahavís to the north. This is why, when you search for Estepona hotels on your favourite booking platform, you’ll see lots of hotels that seem pretty far away from Estepona up the coast!
The main areas of Estepona beyond the old town and the rest of the town centre that are of interest are the port (puerto), Estepona East (such as Cancelada, El Paraíso, Atalaya-Isdabe, and Selwo), Estepona West (such as Valle Romano, Bahia Dorada, Buenas Noches, and Arena Beach), and finally Estepona North (the hills behind Estepona).
If you want to be within walking distance of lots of places to eat or drink at, then you absolutely need to book a hotel in the town centre.
However, if you plan to have a car? The centre of Estepona probably isn’t the best for you, since a lot of the streets are pedestrianised, which makes figuring out driving in the old town a biiiiit difficult. Additionally, a lot of the properties in the old town don’t have parking, which means you’d have to pay for parking in one of the subterranean parking lots.
1. Casco Antiguo (Old Town) and Town Centre – My Favourites!
If you don’t have a car and it’s your first time in Estepona? I absolutely recommend staying in the town centre! You’ll be within walking distance of so many great places to eat and drink at, plus it’s really easy to get to other nearby places (like Marbella or Gibraltar) using public transport.
Both times that I stayed in Estepona before my parents moved here, I stayed in the town centre. And now my parents live in Estepona’s Old Town, so I get to see it a lot!
Estepona is really best explored on foot, and booking a hotel in the Old Town is the best way of appreciating the walkability of it.

2. Beachfront
I can’t talk about somewhere on the Costa del Sol without talking about where’s best to stay if you want to be right on the beach! As I mentioned above, Estepona has 21 kilometres of coastline, so you’re absolutely spoilt for choice if you’re looking for a beachfront stay.
If you want to be right in the heart of Estepona but still within a short walking distance from the beach, then I’d recommend either Hotel Estepona Plaza or Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma.

Book here: Hotel Estepona Plaza 🌟🌟🌟

Book here: Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma 🌟🌟
Both hotels are located less than 5 minutes from the beach (plus you can see it from your balcony!), while still being right in the heart of Estepona.

If you aren’t as bothered about being right in the heart of Estepona, and instead would love a beachfront stay with pools and maybe restaurants and bars located right within the resort, then you’re truly spoilt for choice.
There are honestly so many to choose from, and it completely depends on your travel style and how close you want to stay to Estepona itself.
H10 Estepona Palace is an ideal choice if you still want to be pretty close to Estepona, as it’s located a little beyond Estepona’s port.
For a really luxurious option, definitely consider the 5 star Gran Hotel Elba Estepona Thalasso & Spa or Hacienda del Mar, member of Meliá Collection.

3. Puerto de Estepona
Estepona’s port area is a beautiful part of the town which feels like a little microcosm in itself. There are lots of great places for food and drink (my parents love Rick’s Cafe for drinks, and Amigos de Puerto is an excellent Greek restaurant), and it’s where you’ll have to go if you fancy doing a boat trip, such as a dolphin watching tour.
There aren’t a tonne of hotels down by the port, so if you’re keen to stay in this area then you don’t have as much choice available. However, there are some lovely holiday apartment options here, as well as the 4 star H10 Estepona Palace, which is around 20 minutes away from the port by foot (or less than 10 minutes away by bus).
If you’re looking for a more “local” apartment feel rather than a hotel, then the beachfront Belgravia Club Apartment Estepona located right by the port is a good choice, or the Faro Puerto Estepona holiday rental. Both holiday apartments include access to a swimming pool, as well as a kitchenette and washing machine. These are great options if you’re staying for more than a few nights, or prefer to keep your costs down by not eating out each evening!

4. Estepona East (Cancelada & El Paraíso)
Estepona East covers a fairly wide stretch of coastline between Estepona town and Marbella, including areas such as Cancelada, El Paraíso, Atalaya-Isdabe and Selwo. There are lots of hotels, resorts and holiday apartments around here, but you’ll be a fair distance from Estepona’s historic centre, so it’s important to know that before you book!
This area is best if you plan to hire a car, or if you are happy spending most of your holiday at the hotel. Many of the hotels in Estepona East have swimming pools, restaurants and bars all onsite, as well as direct or easy access to the beach, so they work great if you’re looking for a relaxed resort-style break.
Cancelada has more of a residential, village feel, with a handful of local restaurants and shops, while El Paraíso is known for its golf courses and quieter residential developments. You’re also well placed for day trips to Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara and Benahavís.
Selwo is home to Selwo Aventura, an animal park dedicated to conservation and animal welfare. It’s one of the best things to do with kids in Estepona, and you can even stay AT the park in one of the lodges! This is a seriously unique place to stay in Estepona, and perfect if you have animal loving kids.

Book here: Hotel Selwo Lodge
I wouldn’t recommend staying in Estepona East if your priority is being able to walk into Estepona Old Town each evening. Depending on exactly where you stay, the journey into the centre can take around 15 to 25 minutes by car, and public transport isn’t always the most convenient option.
Estepona East is best for families, golfers, couples looking for a resort-style stay, or if you’re hiring a car and looking to explore more of the Costa del Sol!

5. Estepona West (Bahía Dorada)
Estepona West stretches along the coast towards Casares and includes areas such as Arena Beach, Bahía Dorada, Buenas Noches and Valle Romano. Much like Estepona East, hotels and apartments here may be listed as being in Estepona, even though they’re several kilometres from the town centre.
This part of Estepona is quieter and more residential, with beachfront developments, villas and some large resort hotels rather than busy streets filled with restaurants and bars. It’s a good choice if your ideal holiday involves spending plenty of time by the pool or beach, and you don’t mind driving into town when you want more dining options.
Bahía Dorada and Buenas Noches (yes, there is indeed a place called “Good Night”) are particularly well suited if you’re looking for a peaceful coastal base. Some of the beaches along this stretch feel much less busy than those close to Estepona town, although the trade-off is that you won’t have the same range of shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance.
Estepona West is also conveniently located if you’re keen to explore Casares, Manilva, Sotogrande and Gibraltar. It can be a particularly practical option if Estepona is only one stop on a wider Costa del Sol or Andalusia road trip!
The majority of properties here are aparthotels or holiday rentals, rather than being actual hotels. Estepona West is best for road trippers, families, couples seeking a quieter beachfront stay, or if you simply prefer a peaceful resort over being in the centre of town.

My Travel Tips for Staying in Estepona
Estepona is a fairly easy place to visit, but there are a few things that are worth knowing before you book your hotel and start planning your trip. Some of these tips come from my own stays in Estepona, while others are things I’ve learnt from visiting my parents here over the past five years!
Location matters
I know I’ve already mentioned this approximately seventeen times, but location really does matter when you’re choosing where to stay in Estepona.
The municipality stretches much further along the coast than most people expect, so a hotel that appears under an “Estepona” search may actually be 20 minutes or more from the Old Town by car. That’s absolutely fine if you want a beachfront resort, plan to hire a car or don’t intend to leave the hotel very often.
However, if you’re picturing yourself wandering through the flower-filled streets of the Old Town, going out for tapas and walking back to your hotel afterwards… definitely make sure you’re booking somewhere in Estepona’s town centre!
Always check the exact location on a map before booking, rather than relying on the hotel name or the destination listed on the booking platform. A quick look at the map can save you from discovering that your “Estepona hotel” is actually halfway to Marbella.

Parking is not always simple (or free)
If you’re hiring a car, check whether your hotel has parking before you book. This is especially important if you’re staying in or close to Estepona’s Old Town, where many streets are pedestrianised and many hotels don’t have their own parking available.
There are underground car parks around the centre, but these come at an additional cost.
Staying outside the town centre can make parking much easier, particularly if you book a resort, aparthotel or holiday rental with private parking. This is one of the reasons areas such as Estepona East, Estepona West or up at Estepona Holiday Hills can work well if you’re integrating Estepona into a wider Andalusia road trip.
Also, don’t assume that a hotel listing saying “parking available” means it’s included in the room price. Check the small print, because you may need to reserve a space in advance or pay a daily fee. Many hotels (including bigger resort hotels) have a daily fee for parking, so don’t end up with an unexpected bill at check-in!
Visit lots of local cafes and restaurants!
One of my favourite things about Estepona is the number of incredible independent cafés, restaurants and tapas bars dotted around the town. You could very easily eat somewhere different every day and still barely make a dent in the options available (and believe me, I’m still trying new places!!).
If you’re staying at a resort with restaurants onsite, I’d still recommend heading into town for at least a few meals if you can. Some of the best places are in the Old Town and around the port, and eating locally gives you a much better feel for Estepona beyond your hotel’s swimming pool.
My parents live in the Old Town, so I’ve been slowly working my way through Estepona’s local gems. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it, right?
I’d also recommend avoiding places that rely heavily on photos of generic paella and laminated menus in six languages (which, luckily, Estepona doesn’t actually have a tonne of!).
Some of my personal favourite spots include:
- La Palma (amazing Spanish seafood restaurant)
- La Cozzeria (my favourite Italian place! Their salads are amazing)
- Chanchalay Bar (the best burgers in Estepona, in my opinion)
- MOM Brunch & Coffee (great brunch and one of my favourite Estepona cafes!)
- La Sureña (one of my parents’ go-to choices for tapas)

Learn some Spanish
You can usually get by with English in hotels, larger restaurants and most tourist-facing businesses in Estepona, but knowing a little Spanish will make your trip much easier, and people will always appreciate it if you make the effort!
Even a few basic phrases are useful when ordering food. You don’t need to become fluent before your holiday, but learning how to say hello, please, thank you and “a table for two” is a good place to start.
Estepona welcomes plenty of international visitors, but it’s still a Spanish town, and making an effort with the language is always appreciated.
Rent your car at the airport
If you plan to explore more of the Costa del Sol or visit places such as Casares, Ronda, Gibraltar or some of the smaller inland villages, hiring a car will give you much more flexibility.
The easiest option is usually to collect your car directly from the airport when you arrive. Both Málaga Airport and Gibraltar Airport can work for visiting Estepona, although car hire arrangements vary depending on which one you fly into.
Picking up your car at the airport means you don’t need to organise a separate transfer to Estepona and then find a rental company once you’re already there. It also makes life easier if your hotel is outside the town centre or somewhere that isn’t well connected by public transport.
I’d also recommend choosing a smaller car if you’re planning to drive into Estepona Old Town or visit any of Andalusia’s white villages. Those streets are not made for big vehicles!
FAQs About The Best Places to Stay in Estepona
What is the best area to stay in Estepona?
For most first-time visitors, the best area to stay in Estepona is the Old Town or the wider town centre. You’ll be able to walk to the beach, restaurants, cafés and many of Estepona’s main attractions, without needing to hire a car or rely on taxis.
If you’re looking for more of a resort-style holiday, a hotel or holiday home in Estepona East or West may suit you better. Just remember that these areas can be 15 to 25 minutes from the centre by car, despite many of the hotels still being described as “Estepona” properties.
Is Estepona worth visiting?
Yes, Estepona is definitely worth visiting, particularly if you want a Costa del Sol destination that feels a little more relaxed than Marbella or Málaga. The Old Town is filled with colourful flowerpots, small squares and independent cafes and restaurants, while the seafront and marina give you plenty of options for beach days and boat trips.
It also works well as a base for exploring more of Andalusia, as well as visiting Gibraltar. Casares, Marbella, Ronda and several of the region’s white villages can all be visited on day trips from Estepona.
What is the best hotel in Estepona?
My personal choice for the best hotel in Estepona is Hotel Estepona Plaza. My best friend has stayed there several times and always recommends it highly, plus the location is difficult to beat. You’re in the Old Town, only a short walk from the beach, and there’s a rooftop pool for cooling off during the warmer months.
Hotel El Pilar Andalucía is another strong option if you want something a little more luxurious and romantic. It’s located directly on Plaza de las Flores, surrounded by restaurants, cafés and some of Estepona’s prettiest streets.

Where should I stay in Estepona with kids?
For families who want to stay in the centre, Hotel Mediterraneo by Croma and Las Brisas Estepona both offer family rooms and easy access to the beach and Old Town. Staying centrally also means you won’t need to bundle everyone into the car every time you want food, ice cream or a wander along the promenade.
For a resort-style family holiday, consider SOL by Meliá Marbella Estepona, Macdonald Villacana Club Resort or Estepona Holiday Hills. Hotel Selwo Lodge is also a particularly unusual option, as you can stay within Selwo Aventura animal park.

Are hotels in Estepona expensive?
Hotels in Estepona can be expensive during summer, particularly in July and August, but there are options for a range of budgets. Hostels, simple city-centre hotels and holiday apartments are usually more affordable than the large beachfront resorts and five-star spa hotels.
Prices also depend heavily on when you book. Travelling outside the busiest summer period and booking early can make a significant difference, especially if you want to stay in the Old Town or directly beside the beach.
What is the best place to stay in Estepona for couples?
For couples who enjoy going out for dinner and exploring on foot, I’d recommend staying in Estepona Old Town. Hotel Estepona Plaza and Hotel El Pilar Andalucía are both well located for restaurants, bars, the beach and evening walks through the historic centre.
If your idea of a couples’ holiday involves a spa, a large swimming pool and as little movement as possible, look at H10 Estepona Palace, Gran Hotel Elba Estepona Thalasso & Spa or Hacienda del Mar. These are further from the centre but better suited to a relaxing resort break.
Which hotels in Estepona have pools?
Many of Estepona’s larger resorts have swimming pools, including H10 Estepona Palace, Gran Hotel Elba Estepona Thalasso & Spa, Hacienda del Mar and SOL by Meliá Marbella Estepona.
You don’t necessarily have to stay outside the centre to get a pool, though. Hotel Estepona Plaza has a rooftop pool, so you can stay within the Old Town while still having somewhere to cool down after exploring.
Is Estepona nicer than Marbella?
I personally prefer Estepona to Marbella (although, as I’ve said before, I am biased), but the right choice depends on what you want from your holiday. Estepona feels more relaxed and much less focused on high-end nightlife, while its Old Town is very walkable and still has a strong local character.
Marbella has more luxury hotels, beach clubs and nightlife, so it may suit you better if that’s the main reason for your trip. For colourful streets, independent restaurants and a quieter Costa del Sol base, I’d choose Estepona.
Is Estepona a walkable city?
Central Estepona is very walkable. The Old Town, beach, promenade and most of the main restaurants and attractions are within a fairly compact area, so you can easily explore the centre without a car.
The wider municipality is a very different story. Estepona stretches for more than 20 kilometres along the coast, and areas such as Cancelada, El Paraíso and Bahía Dorada aren’t within walking distance of the Old Town. Always check your hotel’s exact location before booking!

Where to stay in Estepona Old Town?
Hotel Estepona Plaza is my top recommendation for staying in Estepona Old Town. It has an excellent central location, a rooftop pool and easy access to both the beach and the historic centre.
Hotel El Pilar Andalucía is a great choice for a more romantic or luxurious stay, particularly if you book a room with a terrace. Hotel Boutique La Brisa del Mar is another lovely option if you prefer a smaller boutique-style property.
How long to spend in Estepona?
I’d recommend spending at least two or three nights in Estepona. This gives you enough time to explore the Old Town, enjoy the beach, visit the port and try several local restaurants without rushing through everything.
Four or five nights works well if you also want to take day trips to Gibraltar, Casares, Marbella or Ronda. Estepona is also a good place to slow down for a few days during a longer Andalusia road trip.
What is the best time to visit Estepona?
Spring and early autumn are some of the best times to visit Estepona. The weather is generally warm enough for sightseeing and spending time by the sea, but the town is usually less crowded than it is during July and August.
Summer is best if your main priority is hot weather and long beach days, although accommodation prices will generally be higher. Winter is quieter and can still be pleasantly mild during the daytime, but some resort facilities and seasonal businesses may operate reduced hours.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Estepona
For most first-time visitors, I’d recommend staying in Estepona’s Old Town or town centre, especially if you want to walk to the beach, restaurants and cafés without relying on a car.
Hotel Estepona Plaza would be my top overall choice, while Hotel El Pilar Andalucía is a great option for a more romantic stay.
If you’d rather have a quieter resort-style holiday, look at hotels in Estepona East or West (such as SOL by Meliá Marbella Estepona), but always check the exact location before booking.
Estepona covers a much larger area than most people expect, and choosing the right base will make a huge difference to the kind of trip you have!
I hope you found this guide useful and that it’s made choosing your Estepona hotel much easier! Estepona is an amazing place and has so much to offer.
