Europe during the festive season is easily one of the best places to be, with charming towns lit up with holiday cheer and (of course) the incredible Christmas markets that appear around the continent. Below you’ll find the best Christmas markets in Europe, plus what to do when you’re there, how to get there, and the dates for 2025!
You’ll find some of the best European cities for Christmas as well as the most beautiful festive winter markets, and even some that you would never have expected to hear about (who knew Portugal had so many?!).

Europe is home to hundreds of Christmas markets, so narrowing it down is never going to be easy. Every year, destinations across the continent are celebrated through awards like Best Christmas Markets in Europe by Europe’s Best Destinations, which highlight places that truly stand out for atmosphere, quality, tradition, and overall festive experience. Those awards were a starting point for me, but they aren’t the whole story!
For this guide, I wanted to go beyond the rankings, as they tend to reward the Christmas markets that more people are aware of. After all, if you haven’t heard of a hidden gem Christmas market, then you wouldn’t be voting for it!
I spoke to over 20 travel writers and bloggers from all around the world, each sharing Christmas markets they have personally visited and genuinely loved. These are places that left an impression, whether because of the incredible food, the spectacular setting, the magical traditions, or simply that unmistakable festive feeling that stays with you long after you leave.
You’ll find iconic favourites like Vienna and Munich, where historic city squares and elegant architecture combine with cosy wooden huts to be what most people envision when they hear ‘Christmas markets’. The Best Hidden Gem Christmas Markets in Europe
Not all of the truly best Christmas markets in Europe are the ones you see everywhere on Instagram, or when you Google ‘Christmas markets in Germany/Austria/whichever country is on your list this year‘. Some of the most memorable festive experiences come from places that are off most people’s radars, but deliver an incredible atmosphere, sensational food, and lesser-known traditions that you won’t forget.
After all, ‘best’ for one person is different than for another. For me? I don’t like crowds (another reason I love lesser-known destinations), and popular Christmas markets get CROWDED. And I mean literally-cannot-move and stuck-in-this-market-until-you-shuffle-to-an-exit-with-500-other-people (okay, yes, maybe a small exaggeration… but you get the gist!).
Markets like Gdańsk are a great example. Poland often gets overlooked for Christmas markets by a lot of people, yet Gdańsk’s magical Old Town setting, local specialities, and spread-out layout make it one of the most enjoyable markets to explore at a slower pace.
Tallinn is another favourite, where medieval streets, simple wooden stalls, and a cosy, traditional feel create a Christmas market that feels genuinely authentic and real rather than mass-produced, overhyped, and claustrophobic.
Zagreb is another that quietly impresses year after year, with multiple locations across the city, creative decorations, and a strong focus on street food and mulled wine. Did you know that Zagreb is actually the most awarded Christmas market in Europe? Yup! Most people never even think of Croatia when they think Christmas markets, but maybe they should 😉
These Christmas markets may not be as instantly recognisable as some of Europe’s biggest names, but they consistently come highly recommended by travel experts who’ve been, experienced, loved, and are here to tell the tale.. Best Christmas Markets in Austria
Vienna, Austria
The Christmas market in Vienna on Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz) is one of the most fantastic Christmas markets in Europe and known as the ‘Viennese Dream Market’. You can see why with its beautiful setting with historical buildings all around you.
An ice skating rink, a carousel, and heaps of festive decorations are what make this market different from all the others. Charming little chalets are offering everything from molten cheese breads to traditional Austrian Kaiserschmarrn. Of course, you need to try the typical Austrian hot mulled wine (Glühwein).
Make sure to dress up warmly, Vienna in winter can be quite cold and snowy.
There are a lot of historical buildings close by that you might want to check out during your time on the market. The Austrian Parliament, the Hofburg (where the president lives), and the Spanish Riding School are all around the corner. If you are looking for a special way to experience Vienna, book a Fiaker (horse carriage).
The best way to get to Vienna from abroad is by flying into Vienna International Airport. It is located about 20 minutes outside the city. Make sure to take one of the OEBB trains toward Hauptbahnhof, to reach the city centre. Avoid the CAT-trains since they are overpriced!

Best Christmas Markets in Belgium
Bruges, Belgium
If you’re looking for a magical Christmas experience in Europe, look no further than Bruges’ Winter Festival, “Winter Glow“. Running from late November to early January, the festival transforms the already picturesque medieval city into a true winter wonderland.
Similar to other Belgian cities, Bruges replaced its traditional Christmas Market with a full-on festival a couple of years ago. Now, you get to enjoy not one but two Christmas Markets, an ice rink on a lake (yes, really!), a winter pop-up bar (IJsgloed), and a walking trail with light installations.
Don’t miss out on the local treats! Warm up with a steaming cup of Belgian hot chocolate, glühwein (mulled wine), or a shot of Belgian jenever (flavoured gin-like spirit). And try some of Belgium’s favourite snacks like potato fries, waffles, and chocolates.
Insider Tip: Don’t miss out on speculoos cookies either – a little less famous, but so good!
Getting there is easy with the closest major airport being Brussels Airport. From there, hop on a 90-minute direct train to Bruges. You can walk to the historical centre in about 10-15 minutes.

Ghent, Belgium
The Ghent Christmas Market is a hidden gem that deserves its place among the best Christmas markets in Europe. Held in the heart of this medieval Belgian city, the market exudes charm with its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and festive atmosphere. Stretching from Saint Nicholas’ Church to the Korenmarkt,
Ghent’s market offers over 150 stalls selling handcrafted gifts, local delicacies, and seasonal drinks like Belgian mulled wine and hot chocolate.
What sets Ghent apart is how it really blends history and tradition with festive fun! You can enjoy ice skating in front of the historic Belfry, take a ride on the illuminated Ferris wheel for panoramic views (the photo below is from the Ferris wheel!), or just wander and explore the cosy stalls where you can enjoy tasty Belgian treats such as waffles and chocolates. Yum!
The market’s smaller scale compared to larger European cities makes it feel much more intimate and less commercial than many other markets.

Best Christmas Markets in Croatia
Zagreb, Croatia
For good reason, Zagreb has earned its reputation as one of Europe’s best Christmas markets. It was voted the best Christmas market in Europe for three consecutive years, and it’s easy to see why.
The city transforms into a winter wonderland with lights, music, and a festive atmosphere that draws visitors from all over. The main event is centred predominantly around Ban Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac and King Tomislav Square, but you’ll find holiday stalls and attractions scattered throughout the city.
When it comes to food, you can’t miss trying the fritule, Croatian mini doughnuts often topped with powdered sugar or chocolate. Another must-try is the sarma, a hearty dish of cabbage rolls stuffed with minced meat and rice – perfect for warding off the winter chill.
For drinks, make sure to grab a glass of kuhano vino, Croatia’s version of mulled wine, which is both delicious and warming (ideal when it’s down to 0°C, because it can get pretty chilly!).
The closest major airport is Franjo Tuđman Airport, located just 17 kilometres from the city centre. The best way to get into town is by airport shuttle bus or taxi, both of which will get you to the heart of the city in about 30 minutes. Whether you’re strolling through the illuminated streets or indulging in festive treats, Zagreb’s Christmas market is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Best Christmas Markets in Czech Republic
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague’s Christmas markets is one of the main reasons tourists flock to the “City of Hundred Spires” during wintertime. Compared to some Christmas markets in other European cities, Prague’s markets can be described as intimate and authentic, and the perfect place to enjoy delicious Czech food and drink.
The main markets are located in Prague’s Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměsti) and Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí), and they’re by far the most iconic! With a huge Christmas tree, live music, and stalls selling everything from handmade ornaments to hearty Czech food, it’s easy to see why they’re a must-visit.
But the festive magic doesn’t stop there!
You’ll also find Christmas markets in Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky), perfect for picking up unique gifts and warm drinks without the crowds. Peace Square (Náměstí Míru), set in front of the Gothic St. Ludmila Church, has such a fairytale feel and usually opens earlier in November than the others. Over in Lesser Town, the Na Kampě Christmas Market sits in a quiet square by Charles Bridge and is a lovely spot for traditional food and drink in a more local setting.
For something different, there are Christmas concerts throughout the city in stunning venues like the Mirror Chapel at the Klementinum and St. Martin in the Wall Church, where you can enjoy masterworks of classical music as well as Christmas carols. You can also take an Advent Cruise on the Vltava River from Thursday to Sunday, complete with a hot drink and slice of cake as the city sparkles around you.
Book an Advent Cruise for the most magical way of enjoying festive Prague from the water! Starting at €28 per person, this is peak festive joy with hot drinks, tasty Czech sweets, and a unique view of the city lit up with festive illuminations.
Keep an eye out for the Christmas Lamplighter in Old Town, dressed in historic costume as he lights the gas lamps each evening. It’s a small but charming tradition that adds to Prague’s festive atmosphere (but be warned, it’s very popular to watch!).
When visiting Prague’s Christmas market, you cannot skip a drink of mulled wine or apple cider (especially since the average temperature in December in Prague is 32°F/0°C) and a traditional Czech klobása, or grilled sausage.
In addition to warm drinks, traditional food, and desserts, there are also a handful of shops to buy souvenirs and gifts. While Prague’s Christmas market isn’t the largest or fanciest, its stunning backdrop in the heart of the city makes it more than worth visiting.

Transport tip: The least expensive way to get to Old Town Square from Václav Havel Airport is to take bus #59 to Nádraží Veleslavín then transfer to the Metro and take line A to Staroměstská. Best Christmas Markets in the United Kingdom
London, UK
London is one of the best cities in the world to experience Christmas. The city is full of festive window displays, Christmas markets, sparkling lights, and shows. Out of all the Christmas markets in London, Winter Wonderland is one of the best.
What makes Winter Wonderland so special is that it’s not your typical Christmas market. It’s more like a festive fair, which makes it different from the traditional ones in Europe. Hundreds of stalls offer festive goods, food, and drinks, plus various thrilling games, performances and attractions. The event runs for six weeks each year, so you’ve got plenty of time to visit.
Some of the tastiest treats include crepes with After Eight chocolate, mulled wine, German bratwurst, and fondue (yum!). These tasty options are perfect for staying warm as you explore the market.
Winter Wonderland is easy to get to, with London Heathrow (LHR) being the closest major airport. You can reach it from the airport in under 50 minutes. Just take the Elizabeth line from the airport to Bond Street station for 30 minutes, then walk for about 15 minutes. You could even make a day trip to London’s Winter Wonderland from another European city as it’s so easy to reach.

Manchester, UK
Manchester is renowned for its vibrant Christmas markets, which are among the best in Europe. The markets are spread across several key locations, including Piccadilly Gardens, Exchange Square, Cathedral Gardens, St Ann’s Square, and King Street. Beautiful decorations, and the aroma of seasonal treats create a magical ambiance that captures the spirit of the holiday season.
When it comes to culinary delights, the Manchester Christmas Markets do not disappoint. Visitors can indulge in a variety of traditional festive foods, such as bratwurst sausages or Yorkshire pudding.
For those traveling to Manchester, the closest major airport is Manchester Airport, which is well-connected to the city center. The most convenient way to reach the markets is by taking a direct train from the airport to Manchester Piccadilly station, which takes approximately 20 minutes. Once in the city, the markets are easily accessible on foot or via public transport, allowing visitors to explore the festive offerings without any hassle.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market is continually recognised as one of the best in Europe. You’ll love meandering through the market’s bustling atmosphere, with festive music playing and the beautiful backdrop of Winchester Cathedral. The large market features an array of high-quality exhibitors in traditional wooden chalets decorated for the season. You’ll also find traditional food stalls, offering festive aromas throughout. You can enjoy anything from mulled wine and hot chocolate to cheese toasties and apple crumble.
The market is set in the heart of historic Winchester too. The rest of the city has a wide range of cosy pubs and tasty restaurants, and I also recommend visiting The Great Hall, where you can find a replica of King Arthur’s Round Table on display. The hall is also decked out in stunning Christmas decorations this time of year, so it’s well worth a visit.
Winchester’s Chrismas Market is definitely one of the best in the UK! The market is filled with traditional, authentic and artisan stalls (there’s no tat here!) and the historic setting of the city with its stunning cathedral makes it a wonderfully festive place to explore.
Top tip: the market welcomes over 350,000 people each year, so it can get busy! Visit early in the morning or later at night (with everything lit up!) to get the best experience.
The closest airport is Southampton Airport, about a 20-minute drive away or 25 minutes by public transport. For London airports, it’s just an hour and ten minutes by train.

York, England
The walled city of York is where the best Christmas celebrations take place every year. Be it the events at the 13th-century Gothic York Cathedral or the displays at the medieval Rabi Castle, York decks up in every possible way to welcome Christmas. It truly becomes one of the best cities in Europe for Christmas!
The most popular of all is the award-winning York Christmas Market, where, for more than a month, all the festive events bring the holiday spirit to the heart of the city.
Be it the local crafts or the tasty seasonal treats, more than 70 local vendors come together and set up their alpine chalets along Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. You can try a glass of hot mulled wine with spiced rum at one of the best European Christmas markets. Various desserts and simple hot chocolate are also loved by many.
The nearest airport to York is Leeds Bradford International Airport, which is well-connected to many European cities. You can also reach York from Manchester Airport; it takes around 2 hours to cover the distance. York also has good rail connectivity to London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and several other cities. York deserves to be a part of your Europe Itinerary if you want to explore bustling Christmas markets this holiday season.

Best Christmas Markets in France
Colmar, France
Colmar, located in the Alsace region of France, is home to one of Europe’s most magical Christmas markets, making it a must-visit destination during the holiday season.
From late November through December, the city transforms into a winter wonderland with six distinct Christmas markets scattered throughout its charming streets. Each market offers its own unique atmosphere, all within walking distance and free to enter.
What sets Colmar apart is its storybook setting, with half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a backdrop of twinkling lights that add to the festive magic. Colmar is home to some of the best traditional Christmas markets in France, and in Europe.
The largest market, at Place des Dominicains, is perfect for finding festive gifts and decorations, while the market at Place Jeanne d’Arc is a haven for food lovers, offering Alsatian specialities like tarte flambée, mulled wine, and bredele (traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies). Foodies will also love the Gourmet Market on Rue de la Montagne Verte!
The closest major airport is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, located about 45 minutes away by car. Alternatively, visitors can take a direct train from Strasbourg (with its own airport), which takes just under 30 minutes, making Colmar easily accessible for a festive day trip or weekend getaway.

Paris, France
While many of the Christmas markets in Paris are full of mass-produced trinkets and crammed with crowds, the picture-perfect Christmas market on the Left Bank of Paris is a must-visit. This tiny little Christmas market is held in a small park by the Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre Church. It is called Square René Viviani and is directly beside the famous Shakespeare and Co. bookshop. The views across to Notre Dame Cathedral and the Seine are stunning.
Inside the square, two features stand out. One is the Saint Julien fountain, a sculpture created by the French sculptor Georges Jeanclos. The other incredible feature is the oldest planted tree in Paris. This ancient tree is thought to have been planted in 1601. It is supported by two supports after losing its upper branches to a shell during World War I.
The nearest airport is, of course, Paris Charles de Gaulle and you can get direct buses or trains to the centre of Paris where you can hop in a taxi to the left bank.
What is particularly charming about this market is the musician singing in French and playing on an old barrel organ.
The stalls were all local producers of fine goods from pottery to jewellery and more. There are jewellery stalls where the silversmith could make a bracelet or earrings while you wait. A silk scarf booth with all the vivid colours and patterns that evoke Paris. There is even a perfume stall where you can have a perfume concocted just for you. Don’t forget to enjoy some wonderful vin chaud (hot mulled wine) and handmade chocolates and fudge!

Best Christmas Markets in Germany
Bonn, Germany
Although smaller than its neighbour’s offering in Cologne, Bonn’s Christmas Market has a charm that cannot be overstated. This market, nestled in the heart of the historic city, is a quintessential German Christmas experience and a great market to visit with family.
One of the first things to catch your senses will be the aromatic fragrance of mulled wine (Glühwein) wafting through the air. The market offers a wide variety of German culinary delights: hearty Bratwurst, sugary Schmalzkuchen (little fried dough pieces covered in powdered sugar), and the most local offering, the unforgettable Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) served with apple sauce.
Not to be missed is the array of handcrafted an unique gifts available at the market stalls. From intricate glass baubles to hand-carved wooden toys and soft, knitted scarves. This market is small enough to feel intimate but varied enough to be an ideal spot to find meaningful gifts and immerse yourself in the festive shopping experience.
Visitors looking to experience the magic of the Bonn Christmas Market have convenient travel options. The closest major airport is Cologne Bonn Airport. For those traveling from within Europe, (particularly the UK) arriving via the Eurostar and connecting through Germany’s efficient railway network provides a scenic and relaxed journey to Bonn.

Bremen, Germany
Germany is renowned for its spectacular Christmas markets, a tradition that lights up cities across the country each year. If you’re in the North and looking for a magical Christmas experience, Bremen is a fantastic destination. The city hosts not one, but two charming Christmas markets, each with its own unique atmosphere. And because Bremen is relatively small, you can easily get to both the Christmas markets in Bremen in a single day or night.
Freibeuterdorf zum Schlachtzaubermarkt is a mouthful to pronounce but it is a medieval Christmas market that has a buccaneers theme. There are pirate-themed buildings, boats and more. You’ll find games that are themed for kids and adults alike.
Schlachte-Zauber on the other hand is the central Christmas market and is where all the action is at. This is located in the city centre and has loads of stalls where you can buy Christmas souvenirs, mulled wine, all kinds of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, tons of things to eat and more.
It is the biggest Christmas market in the northwest of the country and definitely worth visiting.

Cologne, Germany
The Cologne Christmas Markets are a must-visit for anyone seeking one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. Held annually in the heart of this historic German city, the markets transform Cologne into a festive wonderland. With over seven themed markets, including the iconic Cathedral Market beneath the stunning backdrop of Cologne Cathedral, visitors are treated to twinkling lights, handcrafted gifts, and delicious seasonal treats like Glühwein (mulled wine), Stollen, and gingerbread.

Esslingen, Germany
Esslingen’s Christmas market is a very unique one because it has a medieval theme! Esslingen is a city just 10 minutes southeast of Stuttgart and a short drive from the Stuttgart airport. At the market, visitors enter Esslingen’s old town through a wooden medieval gate with the entry lit by torches
The city’s tiered pink Rathaus provides a beautiful backdrop to this fun market with a large entertainment lineup of dancers, comedians, jugglers and more.
The market boasts hands-on activities like archery and axe-throwing for adults plus a special area for kids with catapults and wooden medieval rides. You can also dip your own candle, which is fun for all ages. There are even public wooden hot tubs for some courageous visitors.
When it’s time for a snack, try the old-fashioned bread on a stick. Even the Glühwein sticks to the medieval theme, with hand-made ceramic mugs. Esslingen is a great place to pick up hand-made gifts, as there are lots of craftsmen selling their wares.

Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt is without a doubt one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. With its beautiful decorations and overall Christmas cheer, it’s a destination that shouldn’t be missed on your European Christmas market itinerary.
Within Frankfurt, there are multiple Christmas markets to visit. They’re best explored by foot, as they are located relatively close to each other. Start with the market located in the historic centre of Frankfurt. Here you’ll find all sorts of crafts, food, drink, and even some rides to enjoy as well.
As for the food at Frankfurt’s Christmas markets, you’ll find numerous German favourites: Potatoes, sausages, schnitzel, pretzels, etc. You’ll also find delicious sweets such as pastries, roasted chestnuts, and gingerbread. As for drinks, you can enjoy a variety of warm beverages such as hot chocolate, spiced cider and mulled wine.
Getting to Frankfurt is easy with the Frankfurt Airport (FRA) being such a huge travel hub. The city is also easily accessible by train.

Hamburg, Germany
Hamburg is a great and underrated destination to visit during the winter season. There are so many great Christmas markets in Hamburg, from the main one in front of the city hall to the smaller ones dotted around the city centre and the nearby residential neighbourhoods.
The entire city gets dressed in lights for Christmas, with beautiful decorations and Santa parades through the centre on the weekends. There’s even a Flying Santa which travels over the main Christmas market every day, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
What is different in Hamburg than in any other German city, is that the city organises a sexy Christmas market as well, where you will encounter a stripping Santa, questionable gifts, and a lot of adult fun. This is not a place to bring your kids but it’s great for adults!
When it comes to eating in the Christmas markets in Hamburg, you can’t go wrong with the traditional bratwurst, served topped with mustard, alongside warm cabbage. You can also indulge in raclette, roast pork with crackling, or potato cakes with different toppings.
Besides the glühwein, you should also try the different add-ons, which include flavoured liquors added to the hot wine.
Getting to Hamburg is very easy from all over Europe, with direct flights. The airport is only half an hour away from the city centre, by train.

Leipzig, a captivating city in Eastern Germany, hosts one of the most enchanting Christmas markets in the country and arguably one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.
Sprawling across the entire city centre and just a short stroll from Europe’s largest train station, it’s easily accessible and invites exploration. Although Leipzig has its own international airport, the nearest major hub is in Berlin, about two hours away by train—a detail worth noting for those planning their trip.
As you wander through the market, you’ll find the quintessential Christmas offerings like Nutcrackers and festive home decorations. However, the true highlight is the diverse selection of food. Traditional favourites like Glühwein, Langos, and bratwurst are abundant, but the market’s unique charm lies in its themed sections. A hot mug of Glühwein is perfect to warm yourself up during the cold German winter!
Discover an Italian market, a medieval village, and even a Scandinavian corner where freshly smoked salmon is prepared right before your eyes. Served simply—often with buns or salad—the salmon is a standout, boasting a rich, tender flavour that needs no embellishment.
Leipzig’s Christmas market is more than just a festive event; it’s a journey through flavours and traditions that perfectly reflect the city’s vibrant spirit. This experience offers a deep appreciation for the city’s ability to blend tradition with a unique culinary adventure.

Munich, Germany
Munich is famous for its Oktoberfest, but it’s also becoming a top destination for its enchanting Christmas markets, where visitors can find themselves in a festive wonderland.
With over 10 different markets, each with its own, unique charm, there’s something for everyone: The Marienplatz Christmas Market is the heart of Munich’s holiday celebrations. It features Munich’s Christmas tree and numerous stalls selling traditional Bavarian delights and crafts.
For a different experience, visit the Tollwood Winter Festival at Theresienwiese, which is held at the same venue as the Oktoberfest. This market blends art, culture, and concerts, running until New Year’s Eve.
For old traditions, the Mittelaltermarkt offers a medieval twist, with roasted meats, sausages, and mulled wine served traditionally, using authentic techniques and spices.
The Pink Christmas Market is a vibrant and inclusive space celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, complete with festive treats.
If you love the castles of Bavaria, head to the Christmas Market at Nymphenburg Castle, where you can enjoy a picturesque setting.
The must-try Christmas market foods in Munich are Käsespätzle (cheesy dumplings), bratwurst (roasted sausages), roasted sweet almonds, and chestnuts. For a drink, try the Glühwein (mulled wine) or Feuerzangenbowle (punch with flaming rum). Don’t forget to take your mug home as a memorable souvenir.
Insider Tip: Locals love adding a shot of Amaretto or rum to their Glühwein for extra warmth and flavour.
Munich Airport (MUC) is the closest major airport, just 40 km from the city centre, with quick S-Bahn connections. Alternatively, Memmingen Airport is a budget-friendly airport option, 110 km from Munich, with buses heading to the city every hour. You can also combine your Munich trip with a road trip around Bavaria!

Nuremberg, Germany
Dating back to the 17th century, the Nuremberg Christmas Market is one of the oldest, best-known, and most popular Christmas markets in Germany. It’s most definitely one of the best Christmas markets in Europe!
In the past, Nuremberg was famous for its toy and gingerbread manufacture – perfect industries for a Christmas market! Today you will find any number of food stalls as well as plenty of vendors for candles, Christmas ornaments, clothing, and souvenirs.
The Christmas Market is located at the “Hauptmarkt” (Main Market) in the centre of Nuremberg’s old town, next to one of the city’s biggest sights, the Gothic Frauenkirche. In the evening, when the market is illuminated with glowing lights, the Medieval flair of this market will make you feel like you stepped straight into a fairy tale.
The most popular and traditional drink at the Christkindlmarkt is of course “Glühwein” (Mulled Wine). There are many delicious snacks on offer, but you should definitely try “Drei im Weckla”, a roll with three miniature sausages typical for this Franconian city. And don’t miss out on a traditional “Lebkuchen” (German gingerbread), another local speciality.
The closest airport with plenty of inexpensive flights from other European cities is Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg, less than 20 minutes from the old town (and the Christkindlmarkt) by subway.
If you visit from overseas and want to see more of Germany during your trip, the larger airports in Munich or Frankfurt may be a better option. From there you can easily visit Nuremberg by train!

Ravenna Gorge, Germany
Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in the Black Forest is one of Germany’s most unique Christmas markets and it is simply magical!
Underneath a 40-meter-high railroad viaduct, you’ll find a traditional German Christmas Market complete with decorated wooden stalls selling handcrafted goods and delectable treats. The railway is illuminated with stunning rotating colours that give the market a whole new feel every few minutes.
If you’re lucky enough to have snow during your visit you’ll find yourself in a colourful winter wonderland! The market also has a Nativity trail. There you’ll find a forested path lit up in a kaleidoscope of colours, lined with wooden nativity scenes.
Market specialities include venison sausages and hot baked apple cider liqueur (Bratapfel glühmost) with whipped cream and cinnamon, or try the Bärentraum mulled wine with blueberry liqueur!
While it does take some effort to get to this market, it is 1,000% worth it!
Basel Airport is probably your best bet, as from there you can take the train to either Freiberg im Breisgau or Hinterzarten and from there take the market shuttle. Alternatively, you can opt to hire a car and take a road trip instead!

Best Christmas Markets in Italy
Bolzano, Italy
Nestled in the picturesque South Tyrol region, Bolzano is a magical destination in the Dolomites for the Christmas season. Known for its charming alpine setting at the foot of the Dolomites, Bolzano’s Christmas market blends Italian flair with Austrian traditions. The market, set in Piazza Walther, boasts beautifully decorated stalls offering everything from handcrafted gifts to festive ornaments.
When visiting, don’t miss the regional culinary delights. Sip on a steaming mug of vin brulé (mulled wine) or try a Zelten, a traditional fruitcake made with dried fruits and nuts. For heartier fare, sample speck (a smoked ham) or warm up with a bowl of canederli (bread dumplings) or indulge in some delicious Goulash.
The market’s cosy, inviting atmosphere, combined with twinkling lights and carolers, creates an unforgettable Christmas experience.
The nearest major airport is Innsbruck Airport in Austria, located about 120 kilometres away. From there, you can take a scenic train ride through the Alps or a bus directly to Bolzano, making the journey as magical as the destination itself. Alternatively, you can also fly into Milan or Venice and take the train into Bolzano.

Montepulciano, Italy
Montepulciano’s Christmas market, while not the largest or most well-known in Italy, is an underappreciated gem in the hills of Southern Tuscany.
Set in the city’s Piazza Grande (Twilight fans will recognize the setting) and side streets, the booths are set up with local trinkets, holiday decorations, and snacks. If you’re hungry, head to the food area just off the piazza for sausages and sauerkraut or hamburgers made with Tuscany’s Chianina beef.
Be sure to pick up some pecorino cheese from the booths and if you’re travelling with children, make your way to Santa’s Village in Montepulciano’s fortress – the route includes bubble snow, a chance to meet Babbo Natale and activities like making cookies for him and writing a letter to him.
For a unique look at the market, make the short climb up the piazza’s town hall tower. You’ll be rewarded with views of the market from above, as well as the picturesque countryside that surrounds Montepulciano.
The market is best reached by car. The nearest major airport is Florence Peretola (FLR), but you can also fly into Pisa (PSA), Bologna (BLQ) or even Rome (FCO).

Verona, Italy
Winter in Verona brings a magical atmosphere, especially with the Verona Christmas Market, which draws inspiration from the iconic Christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany – Verona’s sister city.
The main markets are held in the charming Piazza dei Signori and the Courtyard of the Mercato Vecchio, with smaller venues scattered across town. Together the markets feature over 100 vibrant stalls that beautifully blend Italian and German traditions. Here, you can find hand-crafted ornaments, festive gifts, artisan crafts, and delicious food, including local seasonal treats.
Savour a cup of vin brulé, a spiced mulled wine perfect for warming up on a chilly day. Taste the local pandoro, a soft, star-shaped cake that originated in Verona, and enjoy German-inspired treats like sausages and pretzels.
For getting to Verona, the nearest major airport is Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN). After landing, you can take a shuttle or taxi to reach the city centre quickly. Once you’re there, the market’s central location means you can easily explore on foot.

Best Christmas Markets in Latvia
Riga, Latvia
Riga, Latvia is a lesser-known city located in Eastern Europe that is home to some of the most underrated Christmas markets in Europe. Riga transforms into a magical winter wonderland during the festive season with its snow-covered Christmas markets.
Riga Airport is conveniently located a 15-minute drive away from the historic Old Town. From here Riga is best explored on foot however make sure to dress warm as temperatures in December can reach -4 degrees.
These markets not only celebrate the festive season but also reflect the country’s cultural identity. While wandering around the markets you will be able to indulge in traditional soup, sausages, handmade gingerbread, mulled wine and black balsam hot drinks. In the middle of the markets, there is a large fire pit where they cook various types of meat over the open fire.
The highlight of the markets is the opening weekend’s festivities which include singing and dancing as well as the lighting of the main Christmas tree.
If you are looking for traditional Christmas markets without the price tag of some of the larger cities then Riga is a great place to explore.

Best Christmas Markets in the Netherlands
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Christmas is a particularly magical time to visit Amsterdam. The city is lit up with the intriguing exhibits of the Amsterdam Light Festival, there are stalls selling warm, delicious oliebollen doughnuts, and you can see Christmas trees shining from canal house windows as you cruise along the canals.
The main Christmas markets in Amsterdam include the picturesque Christmas Village outside the Rijksmuseum and the Amsterdam Winter Wonderland at the RAI complex, which includes ice rinks and a giant Ferris wheel. There are usually a number of smaller markets which take place over one or two weekends, including the Funky Xmas Market at the Westergasfabriek and the Sustainable Christmas Market in the Jordaan area.
Amsterdam is an easy train ride from Schiphol Airport. The train connections mean that lots of the Netherlands’ other great Christmas markets including Haarlem, Utrecht’s Swan Market, the cosy Christmas market in seaside Zandvoort and the candlelight festival in Gouda are all within easy reach of the city

Best Christmas Markets in Poland
Kraków, Poland
Krakow is one of Poland’s most beautiful cities, and Christmas in Krakow is when the magic comes alive.
From the end of November until the beginning of January, the main marketplace (Rynek Główny) is transformed into a winter wonderland, with stalls selling everything from traditional gifts like candles, knitted clothing, glass Christmas tree baubles, and wooden toys to iced gingerbread biscuits and amber jewellery, formed from the resin from pine trees which are all across the Baltics.
The Krakow Christmas market is also the place to taste Polish dishes like Pierogi, small dumplings filled with meat or fruit, doughnuts filled with rose and pistachio flavouring and Kielbasa (chunky sausages with herbs and spices). Of course, no visit to a Christmas market would be complete without a glass of Grzaniec (Polish spiced mulled wine), and you will find plenty of stalls selling it in Krakow.
Away from the market square, Krakow has a beautiful main street leading to Krakow Castle and Cathedral, lined with restaurants, bars, and cute shops selling Christmas decorations, soaps, and beauty products.
Krakow, like much of Poland, is very affordable compared to other European countries at Christmas. From its main airport, it is a 30-minute taxi ride to the central Christmas area.
So, if you are looking for one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe, head to Krakow – you won’t be disappointed.

Best Christmas Markets in Portugal
Cascais, Portugal
The Cascais Christmas Village on the beach in Portugal is an experience that truly captures the magic of the holiday season with a fun twist! Just a short journey from Lisbon or Sintra, Cascais transforms into a winter wonderland, making it one of the best Christmas markets I’ve ever had the pleasure of exploring.
Cascais is easily accessible from Lisbon. The nearest airport is Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport), and from there, it’s only about a 30-40 minute drive or a €2 train ride along the coast. The market itself is nestled in the heart of downtown Cascais, with twinkling lights, charming wooden stalls, great live music, and delicious food. the aroma of festive treats filling the air. It’s smaller than some of the massive European markets, but its beautiful setting along the water makes it so lovely!
There are traditional Portuguese treats including pastéis de nata, those famous custard tarts that are even more delightful when enjoyed warm in the winter chill. Pair this with a glass of mulled wine or Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur that warms you from the inside out.
There are also plenty of savoury options, like the delicious bifanas (marinated pork sandwiches) that are perfect for a quick, hearty snack as you wander through the stalls.
There’s also a Ferris Wheel and other rides for young kids to enjoy. Between the food, the beautiful setting, and the joyful atmosphere, the Cascais Christmas Market is truly a holiday gem.

Lisbon, Portugal
A sunny Christmas in Europe? Lisbon will be warmer than many other destinations, and there are many Christmas markets to discover! Many start in the last week of November and continue until the first week of January. The largest and most famous market is Wonderland Lisboa.
The market is beautifully decorated with Christmas trees, creating a festive atmosphere perfect for all ages. Children can visit Santa in his house, and everyone can enjoy a ride on the Ferris Wheel for stunning views over Lisbon. For more fun, lace up your skates and hit the ice rink for a few rounds.
When you’re ready for a break, you’ll find plenty of places to grab a bite, along with stalls offering mulled wine and hot chocolate to warm you up. You’ll also discover vendors selling unique gifts and local products, perfect for holiday shopping.
Wonderland Lisboa is located inside Parque Eduardo VII in central Lisbon. It’s easy to reach using the blue metro line, which also has an excellent connection with Lisbon airport.

Lucerne, Switzerland
If you are looking for a truly scenic and festive Christmas Market in Europe, then Lucerne fits the bill.
Lucerne’s Christmas Market takes place in the heart of the city’s Old Town. From the lakeside and mountain views to the gorgeous painted buildings, this medieval town is the perfect backdrop to all the Christmas decorations and twinkling lights.
In the market, you will find stalls filled with unique Christmas ornaments, artisan crafts and handiwork, delicious treats, a children’s carousel, and of course, Honey Glühwein.
Make sure to try the Swiss raclette, a cheesy dish served with potatoes and pickles. And if you are looking for a sweet local treat, try the Zimtsterne, or “cinnamon stars,” which are sweet and spiced cookies.
You’ll also find plenty of gingerbread, swiss chocolate truffles, and roasted chestnuts to snack on as you explore the stalls.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the famous Advent Wreath. It is the largest in Central Switzerland with a diameter of more than three meters!
Getting to the Lucerne Christmas Market couldn’t be easier. If you are flying in, the closest major airport is Zurich Airport, which is about an hour away by train.
The train offers frequent and scenic rides straight to Lucerne’s city centre.
And if you are looking for somewhere exceptional to stay, the Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is located just a short walk from the market.

The city is easily accessible via Flughafen Zurich Airport (ZRH) and well-connected by train, making transportation simple. Many markets are within walking distance, allowing you to soak in the festive atmosphere.
- Zürcher Wienachtsdorf am Bellevue: This alpine-style market near the Zurich Opera House and Lake Zurich is a favourite, offering delicious food and charming shops.
- Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem Werdmühleplatz: Known for its singing Christmas tree market, this market creates a magical atmosphere with choirs performing in the tree’s branches.
- Dörfli-Weihnachtsmarkt im Zürcher Niederdorf: Wander through the historic old town, where cobblestone streets and medieval buildings give a fairytale feel.
- Münsterhof Christmas Market: Set against the stunning Fraumünster Church, this market is perfect for a warm cup of Glühwein at the Winter Wonderland Bar.
- Christkindlimarkt am Hauptbahnhof Zürich: Located indoors at the main train station, this large market features a magnificent 32-foot Christmas tree, making it a must-see.
- Illuminarium (Lichterfestival im Landesmuseum): Don’t miss this event, which combines stalls with a breathtaking light show for a magical experience.
- Zürcher Weihnachtsallee: Situated on Europaallee, this market features 80 stalls that rotate weekly. At one end, you’ll find the cozy Glühwein Dome Bar, while the other is anchored by the Fondue Chalet.
Zurich also hosts celebrations like the Samichlaus parade, Lucy Lights along Bahnhofstrasse, and the St. Nicholas tram, enhancing the festive spirit.
Indulge in traditional Swiss treats such as sausages with bread, Öpfelchüechli (apple fritters), and raclette cheese. Warm up with classic Glühwein or spiced apple juice, known as Glühmost.
